CANCELLED - PHP & Databases: How MySQL can boost (or kill) your PHP application
Description changed:
PLEASE NOTE: THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED!
We have taken the decision to cancel March's meetup due to concerns around delaying the transmission of COVID-19 (coronavirus).
This is in line with a lot of company guidance asking employees to work from home and not attend unnecessary events.
We will resume in-person meetups as soon as it's practical, until then please join us on Slack!

There is some information below about Federico Razzoli, who would have been our second speaker in 2020 for a database focused event.
Federico is an open source database consultant, specialised in the MySQL ecosystem. After working in some fast-growing companies as a DBA and in some consultancy companies, he decided to be a freelance. Now he helps companies with training, performance tuning, database monitoring, automation, and so on. He is about to relocate to Edinburgh.

We welcome Federico Razzoli as our second speaker in 2020 for a database focused event!
The database is typically the most critical part of a system. It is responsible for storing data, guaranteeing consistency, and retrieving desired information.
And it is very tempting to just hope that this will magically happen, without the need of thinking about what the DBMS needs to do.
Unfortunately, in practice, when an application is slow the culprit is the database.
This talk is about how to make your MySQL queries fast, how to design proper indexes, how to trade-off reliability for performance (or the other way around), and how to take advantage of some useful MySQL features.

We welcome David Thorne to kick off our re-launch of PHP Cambridge for 2020! As a regular attendee, David may be a familiar face for some of you and we are very pleased he has agreed to give this talk, which he originally gave at DrupalCon 2019
In his words: "This talk aims to demonstrate how I as a developer came back from severe burnout, caused by a combination of imposter syndrome, depression and other health issues to rebuild myself as a developer and a person. In the process I also learned to love developing,
and to a degree myself again."
David is a PHP developer; specialising in Drupal for over 10 years. He contracts, mostly with Irish clients working on multilingual projects.

PHP Application Patterns: A Comparison of Interfaces, Traits, Abstractions and Base Classes
by Ruth Ivimey-Cook
In this talk I will compare the several ways to (de)compose code using PHP 7, including Interfaces, Abstract base classes, inheritance and Traits. Presuming some familiarity with the syntax, I will looking primarily at the appropriate ways to use these structures to achieve various application goals, some of their advantages and disadvantages, and how techniques such as dependency injection build on them. This will be a personal and opinionated view of the topic and a discussion/Q&A after the talk is expected.
---
We're meeting at 6:30pm for a 7:00pm start. Pizzas and drinks provided by local digital design and technology agency Studio 24.
Please note a new sign-in process in place meaning that all event attendees need to register on arrival for Health and Safety reasons. There will be 5 iPads on site to speed up the process.
Please note, although PHP Cambridge will make every endeavour to inform you prior to attending, there is a small chance that you may be photographed or filmed by staff of the Bradfield Centre. If this is the case then these images would likely be (but not limited to) used for online publicity, social media or press releases. By attending this meetup you will be granting full rights for the Bradfield Centre to use any images or videos to help achieve The Bradfield Centre's aims.
Note: There 20 parking spaces available at the centre for those that drive. This is usually enough, but if you get stuck please do contact the management team for help.

Ruth Ivimey-Cook hosts a PHP roundtable this evening where we plan to chat about current topics in the PHP industry and answer any questions you may have. Please come along with any topics you'd like to discuss or questions you would like answered. Any topic is open, from beginner to advanced areas.
Some ideas include:
* Where to start when learning PHP?
* What version of PHP should I be using?
* How do you test code / applications?
* What is best practise in PHP? What sort of thing should people be doing to create robust, maintainable web apps?
We look forward to an interesting evening of discussion. Please come along!
If you can have a think about what sort of questions you'd either like to discuss or have answered by the panel please let us know when signing up for the event. You can also get in touch via Meetup.

Headless CMS and PHP: building efficient front-end sites
Description changed:
The idea of the Headless CMS is becoming more and more popular in the industry and is widely seen as the next step for content management. Using the CMS as pure content management and whatever tool you want to build the front-end can give lots of flexibility and also comes with a host of advantages (and its own problems).
But why does everyone talk about JavaScript whenever Headless CMS is mentioned? What is the JAM stack and how should you be serving content to your users?
In this talk I'll cover the common issues of front-end development with a CMS, what a Headless CMS is and why it's useful for both clients and developers, our experience at Studio 24 of using WordPress as a Headless CMS and how we tackled building a progressive front-end to a Headless CMS in PHP and Symfony.

January's talk is all about testing with Behat - the PHP BDD testing framework.
John Hunt will show you how to use Behat to write and perform end to end tests on your web apps, sites and APIs using Behat and the Gherkin language. You'll never want to do manual testing again!
This extremely powerful tool will help you and your team gain confidence in committing and deploying your software, even if it's not written in PHP.

As a change of pace we're having a pub meetup this month - just a chance to have a friendly chat and a drink with like minded PHP folk! Always good fun and very relaxed. Join us on Wednesday the 10th of October at the Cambridge Brewhouse.
This next meetup we will have a workshop with Romans Malinovskis, he will present some alternative ways to build Admin systems for your website, application or back-office.
Romans is the author of several open-source libraries ATK Data, ATK UI.
ATK Data is similar to ORM, but is optimized for high-latency databases (Cloud SQL). It is database-agnostic but fully supports multi-record operations in SQL (aggregation, update etc)
ATK UI is an object-oriented web user interface in PHP. With a similar architecture to Desktop/Mobile GUI it enables you to create complex and interactive web apps without direct use of HTML/JS/CSS.
The workshop will focus on creating an Inventory system - tracking purchase and sales orders and displaying alerts when inventory is low.
You can learn how to implement:
- Basic CRUD pages
- User Authentication
- Menu navigation
(after q/a and break)
- References
- Aggregation
- Expressions
(q/a)
To get the most out of the workshop, bring your laptop and follow by creating your own admin!

Group Discussion: Exploring Deployment Processes in web projects (rescheduled)
Description changed:
Please note: Because of the world cup football, this is the rescheduled meetup. Normally our meetups are the 2nd Wednesday of each month.
Ruth Ivimey-Cook will lead a short talk examining some of the many ways that web projects are deployed to production servers and her experiences of doing so, to set the scene for a group discussion. We want to explore both good and bad deployment experiences and processes (not only those mentioned) to produce what we think of as best practice. Ruth will post a summary of the main points after the event.
We welcome notes about less usual deployment methods for inclusion in the introductory talk. Please pass on details in a few short paragraphs to the organisers (John, Simon or Jo) by 6th July.

Ruth is an experienced senior software engineer and Drupal webdev, currently working for CPL's digital team as a full stack developer. She has been part of the Drupal community since 2011 and has worked with PHP since 1999. She has hosted her own internet mail and web servers before even that! Before getting into Drupal, she has worked for ARM on debugger development, for Global Graphics on large format printer drivers, and at Insignia on CPU emulators

Please join us at our new venue - The Bradfield Centre! We will be in the auditorium which features 100 seats and two 84" ultra HD screens. This is a great new venue which we hope to secure on a regular basis for the future of PHP Cambridge.
Note: There is ample parking available at the centre for those that drive.

We plan to have up to three short, lightning talks. Each talk is normally around 10-15 minutes in length. We have David Thorne for one talk, we have two more spots available. It's a great way to get experience of speaking with a really friendly crowd.
If anyone is interested in doing a lightning talk please let me know in the comments, or send me an email at [masked]
We have two talks this evening, we plan to start a little earlier - around 7:15pm - so please arrive by 7pm so we can start at 7:15. The talks should finish around 9pm, you're welcome to stay on for drinks and chat afterwards.
7:15 - Our first talk is Work Smart, Not Hard by Paula Muldoon
Work Smart, Not Hard draws on Paula’s experience as an international violinist and Makers Academy alumna to promote practices that lead to code that’s well-designed, extensible, easy to debug, and enjoyable to write. A 5-minute violin recital precedes the talk.
Paula Muldoon retrained at Makers Academy after an international career as a violinist and is now a PHP developer at Kurt Geiger. She has performed in over 20 countries, including recording at Abbey Road, and also blogs as The Mindful Violinist and Fiddlers Code. Originally from the USA, she holds degrees from the University of Michigan and the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. She loves software development because you never stop learning!
7:50 - Short break
8:00 - We'll be following this up with a talk on Web mapping (with open data) with Martin Lucas-Smith from CycleStreets.
In this talk/demo I'll show how you can create interactive maps for your site, show integrate geo data, and show how to serve that data from your database as an API.
