FaithTech Sheffield: November meetup

Are you a Christian working in tech, or just someone curious about the relevance of faith to tech? FaithTech is a community of like-minded people who love Jesus and love tech. Join us for a social evening of community building. All are welcome.

We will be meeting again at Sheffield Technology Parks, located in the heart of the city centre. Free pizza included! 🍕 As always, our FaithTech meetups are structured into three distinct sections:

1) Meet: Arrive any time from 18:00 to meet, mix and mingle over free pizza and soft drinks.

2) Learn: From 19:00 we’ll dive into a talk or discussion exploring the intersection of faith and technology.

3) Build: The final section of the evening will focus on what we can do to help. We will spend time praying and also talking about current labs projects.

There is a hard limit on how many people the meeting room at Sheffield Technology Parks can hold so please book early. Also, if you find that you’re unable to attend, please cancel your ticket in good time so someone else can take it.

👉 Using Events and Messaging In The Wild
Distributed systems are great! However, they tend to need some 'glue' to work properly. Usually, that's a backbone events or messaging system.

In this talk, we'll talk about some practical considerations for using a message broker in a real-life scenario. We'll talk about message tracking, versioning, strategies for dealing with large messages, and dealing with failures and dead-letters.

Sheffield Digital: Showcase

The Digital Showcases are for industry pros and the general public alike – the format is four lightning talks and a live interview, with guests invited on stage to explain their projects by showing the work and process with images or short videos. The host is Chris Dymond, who will introduce guests and ask questions during the interview to delve into the details of how the project came about, how it was made and by whom, and what its impact has been, while also summarising and explaining in simple language to make the tech understandable to everyone attending.

In this talk, I'll not only answer these questions, but give you actionable advice on how to improve your code review today!

- How to fix all those wrong things
- What we can do to make code reviews WAY better

Young People In Tech Launch Event - connecting students and employers directly

We are a group of A-level and college students in Sheffield who have come together with the aim of connecting students and employers directly. We aim to do this by organising interactive events that help students form a much better understanding of opportunities that exist, eliminating common misconceptions and making the path to a job in the technology industry much clearer!

The events are organised and led by students to help them be as enjoyable and informative as possible, removing the common power dynamic and facilitating a less formal space where students can feel more comfortable asking questions and getting to know employers and each other, helping with employment and apprenticeship opportunities in the future.

As this is the launch event it is going to be relatively small and simple, with the aim of dispelling myths about employment and building up networking connections, alongside forming the student network and finding people who would be interested in getting involved.



Employers:

We welcome employers from across the tech industry who are interested in meeting students, finding out what they are learning and making, and hearing their questions directly.

Students

If you are a post-16 student who is learning a digital subject and is interested in a career in tech, or just curious about it, this is the event for you!

When you arrive, you will be given a sticky note where you can write your biggest difficulty right now and stick it on yourself. There will also be a space to write more about the challenges you have faced as an entrepreneur, including different sections (e.g. you can write about specific difficulties regarding growth, building a team, mindset, funding, etc.)

Open Forum

We will open the floor to everyone to get a chance and talk about their difficulties in front of the audience. This can include personal struggles in their role as entrepreneurs or specific difficulties related to building a business. Nothing is off the table!

Roundtable discussions

We will identify and discuss the challenges and difficulties that are top of mind for attendees. Based on the topics that emerge, we will separate into small groups and hold roundtable discussions around each challenge. Green software is software that is responsible for emitting fewer greenhouse gases. The Green Software Foundation has defined a number of principles that are important to understand when creating software, as well as a calculation that enables us to measure the emissions of our software. We’ll discuss the principles and the challenges, as well as looking at how we can measure emissions.

The Founder's Journey

Hear from female founders on the highs and lows of starting, growing and running their own ventures.

Women make up just 4% of UK tech startup founders and under 17% of all active companies are led by women. During this event we want to shine a spotlight on women who are taking the path less trodden, be inspired by their stories and learn from their experiences.

Event Aims:

- Shine a spotlight on female founders in the city (and beyond)

- Inspire other women who are considering their own venture

- Provide honest insight into the highs and lows of the founder's journey

Format:

We'll be hearing from a panel of (3-4) female founders, all at different stages in their careers. Each will share their story and then take part in a Q&A/Panel Discussion - so come ready with your questions!

The event will be hosted by local award winning entrepreneur Anna Bollinger. Joining her will be a tour de force of other founders...to be announced in the coming weeks.

Anna Bollinger - Host

Anna is Founder and Director of international award-winning digital agency Appt. Specialists in: Bespoke Web, App and Software Development and Digital Comms in the UK and China.

Anna has spoken internationally, received a variety of accolades for her entrepreneurial accomplishments, is an advocate for Women in Tech and is also the CEO and founder of the charity Hope English School which empowers refugees through English and Digital Skills training.

Dash Tabor - Speaker and Panelist

Dash Tabor is Founder & CEO of TUBR, the deep-tech company removing the limitations placed on machine learning, by enabling predictive technology to produce highly accurate results with both complete and incomplete data sets. TUBR ML’s physics-based approach to machine learning enables predictions on sparse and sporadic data in rapidly changing chaotic environments. She leads the team with over 10 years experience in Product Management specialising in building Data products and propositions. She worked as Head of Product at two scale ups, launched countless products and also advised a Fintech Mobile app startup that was accepted into Techstars 2017.

Anna Parkin - Speaker and Panelist

Anna Parkin is a trained journalist and editor. She's an experienced content strategist with many years' delivering online comms and campaigns for brands and organisations including National Crime Agency, Strata Homes and Healthspan. Anna stepped out of the content agency she owns with her husband Phil in March 2020 to homeschool their three children through the pandemic. She's now establishing a social enterprise called Kids Plant Trees with a few other (tired!) mums to help more kids find joy in nature and their local green spaces.

High (Tech) Tea

Sheffield Women in Tech are kicking off their season of events in style with High (Tech) Tea.

Come along and meet members of the community, hear about the events we have planned and how you can get involved.

Everyone is welcome, there will be tea and cake, and if you wish, you can make a donation to Macmillan Cancer Support as we're running this event as part of their World's Biggest Coffee Morning (except it's in the evening and it's tech-tea :-D )

BYO Tech Lunch

We’re mixing things up this month and instead of meeting for Tech Tea after work we’re grabbing our lunch boxes and gathering for an informal mid-day chinwag at Sheffield Tech Parks.

A significant proportion of a developer's day is spent reading code rather than writing it. Therefore, it's important that the code we do write is easy to read; in other words clean code. By keeping our code clean and simple not only do we ensure that it is readable, but also easier to maintain, test and less prone to bugs.

Writing clean code is not easy. It takes patience and practice. However, there are some simple rules we can follow to simplify the code we develop. In this talk we will consider six rules to help us develop cleaner code. We will also take a look at some of the metrics that will help us measure the complexity of what we write.

After the event we'll head to a local pub for a chat with fellow attendees and a few drinks.
