Whether you are struggling to get your business onto a firm footing, or ready to build on your success and scale-up, it pays to be alive to the strategies and tools that can bring quick wins. Despite the promises that land in your in-box, there are no silver bullets; sustained growth comes from the implementation of a variety of processes and procedures across a business. That does not mean it cannot be quick and it certainly does not need to be expensive but doing things in the right order does matter.

Computing for the Soul: positive personal stories about technology
Description changed:
Hello, and welcome back! This will be a one-off event for the Sheffield Tech Community to meet in-person and share the experiences that helped us through the last 18 months.
We're looking for talks on any technology or practice that held your interest, improved your life, or brought your community together. Don't worry about solving the world's problems - this is about your own experience and looking at technology through an optimistic lens.
The format will be unconference-style: you will decide the agenda. If you'd like to present something, please prepare a 10-20 minute talk - slides optional - and we'll post these on a board at the beginning of the event. You're also very welcome to just attend and listen.
The topic is broad to make it easy to participate, but if you're unsure about your talk, I'm happy to discuss your idea before the event. Fear not, if it comes from your own experience and has a positive spin then it's on-topic!
Afterwards, you are welcome to join your fellow attendees in a trip to a nearby pub.
I've intentionally chosen an optimistic date based on feedback from potential attendees. Clearly, if circumstances change substantially, I may have to cancel or postpone it. I'll give you as much notice as possible if that's the case, and it will not change to a virtual event.
Startup meetup Sheffield is the place to be if you are a founder, investor or involved with startup in any other way!
About this event
Startup meetup Sheffield is an event celebrating entrepreneurship in the Steel City and cutting the ties between the different stakeholders involved with our startup ecosystem.
Having organised a very successful meetup in June for the first time since the pandemic, it is time to turn the meetup into a recurring monthly event as it was requested by a lot of the attendees on the previous one.
As the country will definitely open this time, we will host the event at Sheffield Technology Parks, one of the integral parts of Sheffield's startup ecosystem.
Agenda: TBD
If you are a founder, investor, if you work for a company related to startups or if you are just a startup enthusiast and want to meet like-minded people, this meetup is for you!
Please secure a free ticket as this is a way for us to control the number of attendees and ensure the safety of everyone. You will be advised whether to wear a mask or not depending on Sheffield Technology Parks' policy, but in any case please bring one!
Virtual and augmented reality devices have long been a staple of the gaming and architecture sectors, but are now starting to show a definite move into high value manufacturing in what is a considerable step change.
Introducing augmented and virtual reality devices to businesses can reduce training times or put digital tools in front of an operator allowing them to work hands free.
This session will be hosted by Jonathan Eyre, Digital Twin Lead at the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC), who will informally introduce manufacturers to immersive technology.
The event is part of a series in the AMRC’s Digital Meet Manufacturing campaign, bringing both sectors together through specialist, impartial advice.
Is artificial intelligence the answer to everything or the downfall of man?
However it is interpreted, the term artificial intelligence (AI) is banded around with little understanding to the types of AI and how they are positively applied.
This informal event, part of the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre’s (AMRC) Digital Meet Manufacturing (DMM) campaign, will be hosted by Technical Lead in AI and AR (augmented reality) at the AMRC, Sean Wilson.
Sean will expose the truth behind AI and demonstrate where the AMRC is applying it to today’s industries to give businesses an insight into how they can be a part of the future of manufacturing.
A digital twin is the culmination of connectivity, analytics, machine learning and visualisation - all technologies of Industry 4.0. But what role a digital twin has in a manufacturing business is often less clear.
Through this informal event, Digital Twin Lead at the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC), Jonathan Eyre, will explain what a digital twin is and where it plays a role in the future of manufacturing.
Additionally, Jonathan will detail the opportunities that can be created from working with the AMRC.
This session is part of the AMRC’s Digital Meet Manufacturing (DMM) campaign to lead the way in connecting digital and manufacturing together in a way that benefits both sectors.
Lunch & Learn - Opportunities from working with the AMRC
Description changed:
Why should your company work with the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC)? What can our engineers offer you? What doors can we open for your business?
The AMRC works with companies of all sizes to find novel solutions to existing issues through business support initiatives.
In this session Jamie Hinton, CEO and co-founder of Razor, will describe how his software company honed their skillsets to meet blue chip business challenges. Jamie will talk about his journey from networking at the AMRC to being introduced to Rolls-Royce.
This event is the latest in the Digital Meet Manufacturing (DMM) campaign in which the AMRC aims to connect the digital and manufacturing sectors through a series of meets, workshops, hacks, breakfast briefs and conferences.

Lunch & Learn - Process Control & Machine Analytics
Description changed:
Has your digital business got the skills to start adding value to regional manufacturers?
Manufacturing businesses are increasingly understanding that they can make substantial step changes in process improvements by simply analysing the data that comes from their machines.
At this informal event, the next in the AMRC’s Digital Meet Manufacturing campaign, the AMRC’s Process and Monitoring Team will demonstrate how they have generated added value to manufacturers and how demand is rising in the industry. Project Engineer Robin Hartley will explain how this starts with analysing data and finishes with presenting it in a format that businesses understands.
Digital Meet Manufacturing (DMM) is the AMRC’s campaign to lead the way in connecting digital and manufacturing together in a way that benefits both sectors.
For our upcoming Code Club meetup, we're coming to Sheffield and teaming up with Sheffield Technology Parks. If you are a teacher, an educator, a Code Club host or volunteer, or someone interested in getting involved with Code Club, then this event is for you!

The event will include talks, demonstrations, and a chance to get hands-on with some digital making activities.

After having a 5 month funemployment period in 2017, an opportunity too good to turn down was offered. To set up a brand new Digital team in Sheffield, attached to the greater UK Digital team based primarily in London and Norwich. Diversity targets were not set, except by myself. I had already initiated a Northern network for gender diversity at my old employer, I’d gone on Northern Voices and taught Code First Girls. Diversity was my personal passion and this was finally a chance to get some ‘Balance’ and to create a team I was totally invested in. Fast forward 2 years and there is a 50/50 balance of gender diversity, plus wide age range and a variety of ethnicities represented. Find out more about diverse teams at Aviva
Rachel Ferla
Rachel will share the highlights of the findings from her recently completed desktop research study looking into some of the latest research into the benefits of inclusivity from both the organisation and the individual perspectives.
Hot and cold drinks and a variety of snacks will be provided to keep us refreshed throughout the evening.
Look forward to seeing you there!
The small but important print
Everyone is welcome. You don’t have to work in digital right now, you don’t have to identify as a woman, you don’t have to know how to code or how to explain bitcoin. You do have come in, be open and ready to participate in bringing about positive change.
Babies and children are welcome to attend with a (vaguely) responsible adult.
If you can’t make the event and would like to be kept updated, sign up to our mailing list or follow and join in on Twitter @ShfWIT.

‘Big Data’ and ‘Data Scientist’ may seem like rebadged technology and a modern-day job title, but they are a must for all manufacturers to understand. This is the direction the industry is taking right now.
In this informal session, the second in the AMRC’s Digital Meet Manufacturing campaign, Technical Lead at the Integrated Manufacturing Group Kieran Edge will present how we’re working with international manufacturers to solve problems and how that data collected throws up new problems.
As we connect more devices, collect more data and understand the value from that data, the volume of it will continue to grow exponentially. This means new skills are needed to organise that data. The time for this is now, not the future, but it does not come without its problems.
Digital Meet Manufacturing is the AMRC’s campaign to lead the way in connecting digital and manufacturing together in a way that benefits both sectors.
Urbans Flows Observatory and Sheffield Technology Parks are offering funding and support for projects that can help Sheffield become more sustainable, happy and healthy, using datasets linked to the city’s energy and resource flows.
You can register as an individual or a team to participate in the following Urban Flows Data Hack sessions:
Fri 22 Nov, 6pm-8pm: Preview Talks: find out about urban flows and the available datasets.
Sat 23 Nov: 9:30am-7pm: Data Hack: explore, experiment and create something interesting with data.
Successful ideas explored at the main hack will get a share of £50,000, plus a package of support to help commercialise their project and turn it into a business.
If you've got ideas or feedback that you'd like to share, please come along to our informal open forum.
About this Event
Last year, we held the first Sheffield Digital Festival - it was an experiment which we pulled together in a short time. Thanks to the positive response we've had from the community, we're planning to do it again next year. But we want to make sure that it's an event that is shaped by the city's digital and creative communities. We want to know what you think the Festival should be and how it should take shape.
If you've got ideas or feedback that you'd like to share, please come along to our informal open forum. It will be a chance to meet, talk and kick around ideas for how the Festival should evolve. We also want to form a small steering group to take the Festival forward, so please come along if you think you might be interested in being part of that. This is a great opportunity to help shape the agenda and put Sheffield’s creative and digital industries in the spotlight.
Introducing Digital Meet Manufacturing – Jonathan Bray
What is Industry 4.0? What is Digital Meet Manufacturing? Who is the AMRC and what opportunities can the regional digital businesses have through engaging with the AMRC?
In this event the AMRC's Deputy Head of Digital Jonathan Bray will introduce what we are trying to achieve through Digital Meet Manufacturing.
It is increasingly important that the region has a collaborative eco-system that supports the UKs industrial strategy through leadership, innovation & adoption of technology.
The AMRC is not just there to industrialise, we want to support industrialised solutions.

Leadership comes in a whole rainbow of flavours! Come along and help us think about the different styles and focuses of leadership in the room, and the similarities and differences between us. A chance for some introspection into your leadership practice, as well as the opportunity to pinch some useful tricks from people who see the world from a different angle than you.
