Come join us to discuss all things Accessibility. Harriet Holman and Melissa Rocks will host a talk about the topic in general and how and why we should test for it. We'd love to see some of you there!
Pizza will be provided (thanks to our lovely sponsors at BJSS!) but please message me if you have any dietary requirements we need to account for.
BA/QA Collaborating towards quality product & Test Automation Red Flags
Description changed:
Hi all! Welcome back to Sheffield Testing Meetups! Our first entry is two great talks on "BA/QA Collaborating towards quality product" and "Test Automation Red Flags". We'd love to see some of you there!
Please remember if topics start discussion we're happy to go into that but please follow the Code Of Conduct so we can have a inclusive space.
Pizza will be provided but please message me if you have any dietary requirements we need to account for. Thanks everyone!
This month we're hosting a basic skills workshop. We've got a few exercises lined up to sharpen your analytical and creative testing abilities.
All are welcome. Whether you're a complete beginner looking to learn some new skills, or a testing expert who thinks they know it all. π
Due to the serious lack of physical post-it notes right now (I never thought I'd miss them so much!) you'll need a device capable of editing boards on https://miro.com. It works in most popular web browsers and they have apps for iOS and Android. If you could create an account in advance that will speed things up a bit on the night. π
The rough running order for the evening will be:
6:30 - Virtual Doors open
7:00 - Fun & games begin
8:30 (or whenever we run out of steam) - Back downstairs to see what's on telly.
---
As always, if you'd like to sponsor, host or speak at a future event then please do get in touch! And don't forget to keep an eye on the Meetup page or on www.twitter.com/steelbugs for details of upcoming events.
Big thanks to our sponsors - Tech Parks for letting us use their wonderful meeting space! And Ministry of Testing for just existing and being awesome.
We skipped January. I thought you'd all appreciate an extra spare evening to recover from your festive hangover/food coma/family*. So we're hitting the ground running in February with a chance to catch up, have a chat and see what everyone's grand plans are for 2021.
(*Delete as appropriate)
We'll be chairing an informal round table/lightening talk session where you can share your Testing resolutions for the year. What are you going to do more of? Do less of? Or do better at?
Bring a cuppa and get involved or feel free to just tune in and listen.

It's almost that time of the year again... π ππ The ShefTest Elves have been hard at work putting together another fun festive meetup.
Things have been a bit different this year, and unfortunately that goes for our usual round of HTFDYT* too. But we've put together a couple of tenuously seasonal challenges for you instead.
There's the 'not entirely festive but hopefully still fun' Scavenger Hunt.
And also an 'only festive because it contains the word Rudolf' API Challenge. All you will need is an internet enabled device and your sharpest of wits.
Plus our Christmas Jumper competition has been extended to 'Best Festive Background'. Real life trumps digital I'm afraid - so just changing your video background probably won't cut it...
We hope you'll have some fun, and maybe even learn something new too. There might even be prizes! So put up some tinsel, grab a mince pie or three and come join in.
---
The rough running order for the evening will be:
6:30 - Virtual Doors open
7:00 - The games begin!
8:30 (or whenever we run out of steam) - Back downstairs to eat more Quality Street and panic that you haven't done any christmas shopping yet...
(*'How the f*** do you test...' will almost certainly return next year, providing Iain can think of another good film to pick apart!)
---

This month we're starting the evening where most of our other meetups end... with a couple of rounds of discussion and lively debate.
We'll supply a range of discussion topics, from the seemingly innocuous "What's the best bug you've ever found?" to the downright inflammatory "We don't need testers, just get the devs to write more tests!". It's up to you to expand, defend or deconstruct the hand you're dealt.
Come and play along, share your story or maybe play devil's advocate?

Most of us will have heard of, or used, the popular load testing tool JMeter. JMeter has it's uses and is incredibly mature but it also it's quirks; is there a better, more modern, alternative out there?
For this months meetup, Gareth Squires will be walking us through his recent experiences of using K6, an open-source, Javascript based load testing tool from the team behind Load Impact. He's been using it to load test web applications and Web APIs at 3Squared over the past couple of months. He'll walk through the highs and lows, and the teams efforts to improve re-usability by converting existing API tests from Postman.
Tune in:

(Getting Deja vu? Yes. Ok. We have done this one before, with a small group back when we were allowed to meet up in the real world. We think it will run really well over Zoom.)

We all know about tools like Postman and DevTools that testers use to help them on a daily basis. (If you don't, you're really missing out!) But what happens if there isn't really a tool to help you test the thing being built?
There's no point building something if you can't prove that it works. And if you need to build something to help prove it works, who better to build the tool to help test the thing than the people building the thing! Still following?
Iain Mc will be running through some of the in-house tools that the teams at Sky Bet have built to make testing their products just that little bit easier.
I'm genuinely really proud of the fact that some of the prioritised tickets going through our board are called things like "Build a tool to help test ...".
There's nothing groundbreaking in this bunch. They're mostly little apps that make our systems easier to observe or they replicate a service that we can't control. But the difference they make to my life as a tester is huge! And maybe they'll give you some ideas that you could take away and help improve the lives of your testers too.
If you have got anything similar that you would like to (and are allowed to!) show off then drop us a line and you can join in on the night.
Wednesday August 5th. Zoom. Room opens 6:30pm. Talks begin at 7.
We'll update the Zoom link in advance of the meetup.

After the last 2 sessions we thought it was time to jump back in with something more technical! This month, our very own Peter Mill has volunteered to talk about service virtualisation covering the why and the how as well walking us through his tool of choice; WireMock. This will be an interactive session so anyone wishing to follow along at home will need to download and install the following before the session:
1. WireMock (http://wiremock.org). This needs to be running in standalone mode It relies on Java so you will need to install either the Java 7 JRE or Java 8 JRE. Instructions on how to do this can be found here: http://wiremock.org/docs
2. Postman (https://www.postman.com/) so you can make API requests. If you are not familiar with Postman, any other client that can make HTTP requests will work (Curl, wget, SoapUI etc).
UPDATE: There will also be an opportunity to put any questions to WireMock's creator, Tom Akehurst.
If you hit any problems before the session, feel free to reach out and we'll help you get setup :).
Fun starts on Wednesday July 8th at 7pm.
I'll add the Zoom meeting link closer to the date.

Continuing the remote working theme, we thought weβd spice it up even further and cover another remote working challenge; training and welcoming new team members!
Iβll be doing a talk on the approach weβre taking to welcome our new placement students this summer. Selfishly, I want to also use this as an opportunity to use your collective genius to help us whilst using it as an opportunity for you to to share any experiences youβve had.
Come along and share your top tips and experiences!

Unsurprisingly, our May meetup is going to be a remote meetup. And our topic is entirely un-original but oh so incredibly topical!
We're having a round table on Remote Working.
(Bring your own table. And put a laptop on it.)
Maybe you're missing the convenience of having your team literally at arms length? Or are you enjoying the time alone to focus and get work done? Do you work remotely anyway, so this is just business as usual for you?
Come along and share your top tips on testing from a distance!

Because anyone can celebrate success! At this month's meetup we're celebrating all the things we've messed up, and more importantly, the lessons we've learned along the way...
We're after your war stories, your battle scars, that time you accidentally deleted the website or ran `shutdown -h now` in the wrong terminal. π
β‘οΈ Standard Lightning Talk format. Your talk can be anything from 30 seconds to a few minutes long. Don't worry about bringing a slide deck.
I'll leave you with some inspirational failure quotes to help you embrace the things you've failed at. https://everydaypower.com/inspirational-failure-quotes
We look forward to seeing you and hearing all about them on the night.

Is it too late to still be wishing people a happy new year? Maybe it is? Well at least I'm not kicking off with one of those terrible '20/20 vision' jokes!
Anyway... Yes... You may have noticed that we took a little break over the festive period. Apologies if you were there banging on the door on New Years day. It's time to kick off ShefTest '20 with our standard Lean Coffee style event to find out what you want to talk about this year.
If you don't know about Lean Coffee, all the info you need is here: https://leancoffee.org/
Ours comes with a twist. We know you all desperately want to know about Security, Performance and Automation. We'll certainly have some of that on the menu. We want to know what ELSE you want to talk about in 2020, so all of the popular subjects are banned!
Come along. Bring some ideas. We're all ears.

It's that time again! This year we're giving the benefit of testing hindsight to one of Arnie's most action packed roles - Howard Langston.
You guessed it... This year's movie is Jingle All The Way. We'll be offering the much needed analysis and critical thinking that would have helped Howard get his son Jamie that Turbo Man action figure for Christmas.
Come along. Get involved. Throw on a christmas jumper. There will probably be a few festive treats on the go too. ππ₯§π§

It's been a while and it went down well last time, so we're doing another lunch meetup.
Maybe the kids have gone back to school and you can't hang around after work? Or you work in Sheffield but have to beat the traffic on Parkway? If you haven't been able to get to an evening meetup yet, we'd love to see you. Or if you're a regular and just haven't been to Kommune yet, this is a great opportunity to try it out. There's something for everyone.
ππΊπ http://kommune.co.uk/
No format for this one. Just turn up when you can. Grab yourself some food. Have a chat to other testers in the area. Brag about any cool stuff you're working on. Bring your challenges and hopefully get some answers.
As always, if you'd like to sponsor or speak at a future event then please do get in touch! And don't forget to keep an eye on the Meetup page or on www.twitter.com/steelbugs for details of upcoming events.
After last weeks lighting talks, we're back with a more technical meetup. As testing is getting more technical and the industry is shifting more towards Devops, we thought we'd have another evening on Testing Platforms.
Our first talk is from Tim Allen, Devops Engineer at 3Squared who will be delivering a talk on; 'Automated Tested within CI/CD'.
"This will be a look at running automated tests within a CI/CD pipeline, handling errors and promoting successful builds. Not a tutorial as such but more of the shift in culture needed to make something like this work."
Our second talk will be from our co-organiser, and quickly becoming a regular speaker, Samuel Turner who will be delivering his talk; 'On-Demand Test Platforms at U Account'.
"At U Account we can provision entire test platforms as and when we need them, via a Slackbot we call Jarvis. As the platforms live in AWS (each in an EC2 instance), there's no limit to the number of platforms we can have provisioned at any one time.
I'm going to share an overview of our infrastructure, the things we've learnt, the advantages this has given us so far, and what we're planning on doing with it next."
---
The rough running order for the evening will be:
6:30 - Doors open
7:00 - First Talk
7:30 - Break and food
7:45 - Second Talk
8:15 - Leg stretch
8:30 - Head off to a local pub for networking and such.

One of our favourite aspects of running a meetup is meeting new people and hearing stories from them, so we've decided to dedicate a whole evening to it!
We'd particularly like to hear from people about how they got involved with testing, what they've done since, and where they hope to go in future. We hope this would help us select topics for future meetups. We'd also really like to hear from people who don't work full-time in testing, but still do testing as part of their job, or as a hobby!
If anyone has a lightning talk prepared on any software related matters, we'd also love to hear those. If there's time towards the end, possibly some none testing related talks too...
If you've never done a lightning talk before - then why not jump in and have a go? You don't need to be a subject matter expert or a master of public speaking. You can talk about your own ideas or experiences.
Talks should be anything from 99 seconds to a few minutes long. You can use the TV to show slides if you want them, as long as you bring them along on a USB drive or can email them to us in advance so we're ready to go on the night.

We know that everyone loves a talk about a new automation or security tool, or a live demo of some cool new framework... But tonight we're talking about the most important tool a tester can wield - their brain! We've got a couple of great talks about the skills a that a human tester can bring to the table and why we'll still be safe when the robots take over.
The rough running order for the evening will be:
6:30 - Doors open
7:00 - First Talk
7:30 - Break and food
7:45 - Second Talk
8:15 - Leg stretch
8:30 - Head off to a local pub for networking and such.
---
Talk one: Iain Mc - Why all new parents are basically testers.
For the past 18 months, almost all Iain has done is be a parent or a tester, and it turns out some of the skills required are transferable! He'll be taking a (hopefully) entertaining look at where the two jobs overlap.
---
Talk two: Cat Luker - Why Can't We All Just get Along?
Robots are takin' our jawbs! Manual testing is old news! It's all about automating in the CI / CD cloud with the IoT blockchain! Neither of these is really the situation on the ground with software testing today, so what's the best approach? Cat will talk about differences in approach, where manual testing is better than automated and vice versa, and even tackles the vexed question of unit tests. Come to this talk to discover a third way, or at least hear me rant about Jenkins :D

After our last technical meetup, we thought it was time to dive back into something more non-functional for July's meetup! Andrew Shaw has kindly offered to come and deliver his talk 'How to think like a tester" which he has delivered at various other meetups and conferences!
"How to think like a Tester" is a talk about how software testing strategies are useful for testing software, the benefits and limitations of automated testing, and how having a creative and exploratory mindset is useful as a tester. My talk also includes some fun activities for testing software, as well as ways professionals can develop as software testers.
As before, we are back at Sheffield Technology Parks.
The rough running order for the evening will be:
6:30 - Doors open
7:00 - Talk Part 1
7:30 - Break and food
7:45 - Talk Part 2
8:15 - More food and that
8:30 - Head off to a local pub for networking and such.
Thanks again to our sponsor (other than the Minstry of Testing of course); U Account. They'll kindly be providing us with food & drinks again.
As always, if you'd like to sponsor, host or speak at a future event then please do get in touch! And don't forget to keep an eye on the Meetup page or on www.twitter.com/steelbugs for details of upcoming events.
