This week's meetup will be a small informal event for discussing everyone's thoughts on Bitcoin over these past few weeks. Due to current events, this will be a small meetup with a limited number of spaces.
This is foremost a technical meetup, so if we have time after the discussion I will also do a quick presentation on how mining works (which was the original plan). But ultimately we'll see how the meetup unfolds.
So if you're interested in Bitcoin and want to talk about it in the evening, Bitcoin Sheffield is still on for Wednesday.
Note: Our host may make changes to their opening hours, but for now everything is normal.
Note: Use your own judgement on attending given the current pandemic.
Do some coding work in a room with other people working on bitcoin projects.
There is no plan or presentation. We just have a room that we can hang out and code in. Bring your laptop and write some code in the company of other people who have the same interest.
All skill levels (and programming languages) welcome.
Message me if you have any questions.
Greg.
P.S. This is the first one, so we'll just figure it out as we go.
Bitcoin Sheffield: How do lightweight wallets work?
Description changed:
If you've ever sent or received bitcoins, you've almost certainly done it using a lightweight wallet.
But how do they work, and how secure are they?
At this meetup Jake Rawsthorne (Computer Science student at University of Sheffield) will cover the mechanics of lightweight wallets, so you'll have a better understanding of the benefits and trade-offs of using one.
Jake's GitHub: https://github.com/jrawsthorne
-----
About the talk.
"This talk will explain what a light wallet is and how it differs from other types of wallets. You'll understand how your wallet knows when you've received a transaction and how it verifies that transaction is valid according to the rules of Bitcoin. This will include an explanation of the basic idea behind simplified payment verification (SPV) including its advantages and disadvantages when it comes to security and privacy."
-----
About Jake.
"I'm a third year Computer Science student at the University of Sheffield and got interested in Bitcoin after listening to an Andreas Antonopoulos interview. I was immediately drawn in by the idea of a censorship resistant currency not controlled by a single party and since then I've tried my best to understand how every part of it works. I really enjoy explaining what I've learned to other people and hope they become as interested in it as I have."
-----
What is this meetup for?
If you're interested in Bitcoin, this meetup is for you. All skill levels are welcome.
-----
What do I need to bring?
Just yourself, no laptop needed.
-----
Will there be free beer and pizza?
No, but we will head to the pub afterwards.
-----
What time does it start?
The talk starts at 6.30PM. But if you arrive early the doors will be open from 6PM. Just push the buzzer and wait for reception to let you in.
Are you interested in Bitcoin, but don't know where to start? Do you already have some bitcoin, but want to learn more about security?
Then this talk is for you.
The presentation will include live demonstrations, and will answer the most common questions involved in getting started with Bitcoin, such as:
* What is Bitcoin?
* What is a wallet and which one should I use?
* Where is the safest place to buy bitcoin?
* What happens when I make a bitcoin transaction?
* How can I keep my bitcoin secure?
Basically it's a complete introduction to using Bitcoin. It is aimed at beginners, but also aims to be useful for those who already have experience. And no, you don't have to be techy to understand the topics in this talk.
So if you're interested in learning more about Bitcoin, feel free to come along. Newcomers are welcome (and this is the ideal time to come if you're new)!
-----
Who's giving the talk?
My name is Greg Walker, and I've been working with Bitcoin for over 5 years. I've developed a variety of tools for Bitcoin, and I'm currently working on an educational website to explain how it works (https://learnmeabitcoin.com).
I am a website developer by day, and I've been fascinated by Bitcoin ever since I first used it.

A technical talk explaining the inner workings of Bitcoin.
This presentation will cover "Script" -- the part that locks and unlocks bitcoins inside the blockchain.
It will answer questions like:
* What stops other people from spending my bitcoins?
* What kind of locks can you place on your Bitcoins?
* How does multi signature work?
* What's the difference between different addresses (e.g a 1address and a 3address)?
* How does Script work?
This is one of the more technical talks, but it's designed to be beginner friendly. So don't be afraid to come even if you're fairly new to bitcoin.
See you there!
P.S. If you're completely new and looking for advice, I'm planning to do a very simple introduction to using Bitcoin in January.
About Me:
My name is Greg, and I've been working on Bitcoin projects for around 5 years. Bitcoin can seem complex at first, so I like trying to explain how it works as simply as possible.
My talks are ideal for anyone who has an interest in Bitcoin, and wants to get a better understanding of how it really works.
My Twitter: https://twitter.com/in3rsha
Notes:
* The talk starts at 6.30, but doors are open from 6, so feel free to come a little earlier for a chat beforehand.
* There is no free pizza or beer at the event.
* We will head to the pub afterwards (if you fancy it).
* Follow the Bitcoin Sheffield Twitter for updates: https://twitter.com/bitcoinsheff
This will be a technical talk explaining how private keys and addresses work in Bitcoin. You know, the things you use to send and receive bitcoins from your wallet.
It will give you the answers to questions like:
* What is a private key, public key, and address?
* Where do they come from?
* Can you generate the same address as someone else?
* What are digital signatures and how do they work?
* What can I do if I lose my private keys?
This is going to be one of the most technical talks so far, but it's full of cool diagrams and simplified explanations, so don't be afraid to come along even if you think you're a beginner.
However, I should mention that this talk isn't going to be terribly useful if you're just looking for advice on getting started with bitcoin (e.g. buying and storage). I'm planning on doing an introductory talk on "Bitcoin Basics" in January instead. This one is another deep-dive in to the inner-workings of the technology, so that you can have a better understanding of what exactly is going on with your money.
Anyway, I'll see you there.
Greg.

This meetup will begin with another animated presentation on the basics of how bitcoin works. This one will focus on bitcoin transactions.
It will answer questions like:
* What is a bitcoin transaction?
* How do bitcoin transactions actually work?
* Where do bitcoins come from?
* What are transaction fees and why are they important?
* How do bitcoin wallets work?
In short, this talk will cover everything you need to know about how bitcoin transactions work.
This talk will contain some technical details about bitcoin transactions, but it's designed to be very beginner-friendly, so don't be afraid to come if you don't have a technical understanding of bitcoin. However, even if you're already pretty experienced with bitcoin I'm hoping there will still be a few things you'll find interesting.
So whether your a complete beginner or crypto expert, please feel free to come along. We will be heading to the pub after the talk.
See you there!
Greg.

The first one wasn't a failure, so here's the second meetup for Bitcoin Sheffield. Worth a visit if you have any interest in cryptocurrency, or if you're just curious.

At this meetup I'll cover the basics how blockchain technology works. I'll answer questions like:
* What is the blockchain?
* How does the blockchain work?
* How many confirmations should you wait for?
* Can you rewrite the blockchain?
* What's the difference between a hard fork and a soft fork?
As always there will be plenty of diagrams and lots of beginner-friendly explanations. I'm a techy person at heart, but I like trying to explain complex systems in a way that everyone can understand.
So if you're interested in cryptocurrency, or just want to find out what Bitcoin is, please come along. Doors open at 6PM, and the talk will begin at 6.30PM. Feel free to come and enjoy the air-conditioning before the talk starts.
If you have any questions at all, please ask.
See you there,

At this meetup I'll explain some more basics about Bitcoin. It will either be about how the blockchain is built, or how individual transactions work. I'll update this page closer to the date. Either way, there will be plenty of diagrams and lots of beginner-friendly explanations. I'm a techy person, but I like trying to explain complex systems in a way that everyone can understand.

This talk will provide a very simple explanation of Bitcoin. It will begin with a quick discussion about why Bitcoin was created, followed by a step-by-step visualisation of how the blockchain is built, and finishing with a live demonstration of how Bitcoin mining works.
Who am I?
My name is Greg, and I've been working with Bitcoin since 2014. I'm currently working on a blockchain explorer and educational website for Bitcoin: https://learnmeabitcoin.com
I moved to Sheffield last year. I thought it would be cool to create a group to meet other people in Sheffield who are interested in Bitcoin/blockchain/cryptocurrency too.
Who is this meetup for?
This is the first meetup for Bitcoin Sheffield, so it's open to anyone who's interested in Bitcoin or cryptocurrencies in general.
The talk will cover the basics of how Bitcoin works, so it's suitable for anyone with little (or no) understanding of Bitcoin. However, even if you are familiar with Bitcoin, I hope you will find some interesting things in this talk anyway. It's pretty cool.
What do I need?
Just yourself. No Laptop or anything is necessary (it's going to be a talk with a presentation on a projector).
Where is it?
This event will be taking place at Sheffield Technology Parks (in the conference room upstairs). It's about a 5-minute walk from the Train Station.
When is it?
Doors open at 6PM, and the talk will start at 6.30PM. Feel free to come and chill out before the talk starts.
Notes.
1. THERE IS NO FREE BEER OR PIZZA AT THIS EVENT. However, we will head to the pub afterwards, probably the Roebuck Tavern up the road.
