The SmartSheffield meetup is back at Sheffield Hallam University on Monday the 23rd October, hosted by the Smart Computing Subject Group!
This time we're going to be looking at environmental sensing to see how these technologies are being used to gain insights into our city and surroundings.
As always, the format is that people can arrive from 6:30pm, then from 7pm there will be four short talks, followed by a quick bulletin from Chris Dymond on the latest local smart city news of interest, and then refreshments and chat until roughly 9pm.
Everyone is welcome and the meetup is designed for anyone with an interest in urban technologies and where cities are headed, not only professionals. Smart cities is a very broad and ever-changing field and we are very grateful to be able to welcome people from many different fields, backgrounds and levels of knowledge.
If you are involved in a project that involves environmental sensing and would like to speak, please get in touch!
We'll be back at our spiritual home on the top floor of the 3 St. Paul building in the centre of Sheffield, as our partners at Arup are able to host us again for the first time since 2019! And in this, our 20th(!) edition, we're going to be taking a look at the latest in in-building IoT applications and how workspaces are adapting to the new post-covid reality.

Also, while Covid-19 restrictions are no longer legally enforced, we do encourage everyone to test before coming and to stay away if the test is positive or you are showing symptoms. If you do attend - and we do hope you do, of course, as we have all missed the social side of these events! - by all means wear a good mask and keep a respectful distance from other attendees. We are also aiming to stream the talks online for those who can't be there in person on the evening.
We will be announcing the speakers in due course, as they confirm, so please check back here or follow us on Twitter @SmartSheffield and make sure you're subscribed to the mailing list which you can subscribe to at our website - SmartSheffield.city - where you can also see the talks and notes from our previous events.
Please book your ticket early as places are limited, and share this announcement with your networks and anyone you think will be interested!
The SmartSheffield meetup returns for Digital Festival week with a showcase of local smart city Startups to watch out for!
We'll be returning to our pre-Covid schedule, starting at 6:30pm, with food and drink provided by Creative Space Management who operate the Electric Works - huge thanks to them!
Schedule:
18:30-19:00 - Arrival and welcome refreshments.
19:00-20:00 - Talks.
20:00-21:00 (ish) - Food, beverages and networking.
As per usual, there will be four main talks of 10 minutes each, followed by a "SmartSheffiled News" update, delivered by yours truly. There will be no Q&A after the talks, as the speakers are available for conversations afterwards. We'll also ask them to join the Airmeet to engage with the online audience for a few minutes during the networking period as well.
As previously mentioned, we're taking the opportunity to provide a platform to the founders of some local startups that are applying digital technologies and innovative thinking to a diverse range of challenges that cities and communities are facing. They all need support to develop their ideas and trial their products and services, so please come and lend your expertise and connections as well as discovering some of the great work that's going on in Sheffield!
The SmartSheffield meetup is a free and inclusive open forum and social meeting space for anyone interested in 'smart cities' or urban innovation, and everyone is welcome.
The group is open for anyone to come along, find out what’s going on and contribute - the main aims are to bring people together who share an interest in using technology to improve the city and the lives of its citizens, and to discover, discuss, get involved in and give birth to local smart city projects and initiatives.
We employ Sheffield Digital's Code of Conduct and abide by the standards it lays down.
To get an idea of the kinds of topics we cover, please read about the previous meetups at https://SmartSheffield.city
This month's SmartSheffield looks at uses of Internet of Things technologies in the service of citizens rather than cities - i.e. how the technology is being used by citizens, how it is being appropriated and how city actors are reaching out to citizens to explain the technology and the uses it is being put to.

SmartSheffield May Meetup - Connecting with Citizens
Description changed:
The SmartSheffield Meetup is back on Monday the 14th May at the usual place and time, and with a meeting of the Things Network Sheffield beforehand at 5pm.
The theme for this edition is citizen engagement, and we’ll be hearing about ways in which people can be engaged and included in visioning and decision-making around Smart City and urban technology projects. The meetup won’t be limited to that theme though, of course; as ever anyone can present if there’s a slot available.
Check the Eventbrite listing for more details and to get your ticket!
April's edition of the SmartSheffield meetup will take place in conjunction with Barclays Eagle Lab Live, which runs from the 27th March until the 20th April at Sheffield Hallam University's Cantor Building on Arundel Street, in partnership with Sheffield 3d printing specialists ObjectForm.
As well as engaging with Eagle Lab Live, we will also be hearing about smart approaches to city-wide cancer services; the new Urban Flows Observatory project and the Sheffield Things Network.
There are opportunities to get directly involved in all of these initiatives, so please pass this invitation on to anyone and everyone you think might be interested in participating!

April's edition of the SmartSheffield meetup will take place in conjunction with the pop-up Barclays Eagle Lab, which will be taking place for a month from the 27th March at Sheffield Hallam University's Cantor Building on Arundel Street.
Full details of the programme and speakers will follow, but one of the things we will be looking at for certain is the Things Network and the opportunity to build out a LoRaWAN network across Sheffield, in a similar way to what is currently happening in Manchester and Leeds. We will also get to engage with the activities of the Eagle Lab and explore how some of those things relate to urban innovation and technology.
SmartSheffield is a regular open grass-roots meetup for people interested in 'smart city' activity & projects in Sheffield, usually on the last Friday of each month.
