SmartSheffield #22 - Is It Easy Being Green?

The SmartSheffield meetup will be back for our 22nd edition on Monday the 22nd May 2023, hosted by one of our main sponsors Arup!

This time we'll be looking at GreenTech and the role that technology plays in nature-based solutions that are being developed to make cities more efficient, sustainable and liveable.

As always, the format is that people can arrive from 6:30pm, then from 7pm there will be four short talks, followed by a quick bulletin from Chris Dymond on the latest local smart city news of interest, and then refreshments and chat until roughly 9pm.

Everyone is welcome and the meetup is designed for anyone with an interest in urban technologies and where cities are headed, not only professionals. Smart cities is a very broad and changing field and we are very grateful to be able to welcome people from many different fields, backgrounds and levels of knowledge.

Smart Sheffield #13

The SmartSheffield Meetup returns in September for a new run of events, starting with a focus on initiatives that tackle the city's Air Quality!

SmartSheffield is an open forum for people interested in urban innovation and the use of new technologies and approaches to help to address challenges both big and small. We're very happy to announce new sponsorships with Ove Arup Group, Pitch-In at the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Digital and a new run of six events planned for the first Monday every two months, starting on the 2nd September.

For our first meetup back, we'll be looking at current efforts to measure air quality across the city, both institutional and comunity-driven, and what kinds of interventions are being proposed.As always, there will also be a Sheffield Things Network meeting beforehand at 5pm.

The SmartSheffield meetup is a free and inclusive open forum and social meeting space for anyone interested in 'smart cities' and urban innovation, and everyone is welcome.

This month's SmartSheffield looks at uses of Internet of Things technologies in the service of citizens rather than cities - i.e. how the technology is being used by citizens, how it is being appropriated and how city actors are reaching out to citizens to explain the technology and the uses it is being put to.

Urban Flows Observatory Sensor Build Competition: Final Pitching

Come and join us for the final pitching event of the Urban Flows Observatory #sensorbuild competition!
Over the past two months, our nine competition entrants have been building prototypes of sensors that can capture data about how energy and resources flow through the city of Sheffield.

They now face our panel of experts for the final pitch event, where they will show their prototype, demonstrate how it will capture data, and present how it could be scaled across the city. For the advanced stream entrants, we will also hear how their product could be commercialised.

Our winners will receive a fantastic prize package including a £500 cash prize, support for commercialisation (advanced stream only), and the chance to see their sensors located in Sheffield.

Each pitch is 2 minutes long and judges have 5 minutes for Q&A. There'll be an opportunity for you to meet the competition entrants and see their prototypes, as well as vote for your favourite in the Popular Vote category. We'll be providing pizza and beer, with big thanks to our event sponsors, Arup.
