Playground

Playground is a week-long free exhibition of interactive art for children and families. This year it is subtitled Music/ Response, so you can expect a noisy experience!

Through music, we’re able to express every emotion, and with the show this year we’re asking a number of questions: In these divided times, is music and rhythm key to cohesion? How do we create empathy and understanding through sound? How do we use sound to connect to ourselves and each other?

Algorave Sheffield

Algorave is a combination of "algorithms" and "rave", the opportunity to dance to alien rhythms and visuals, all created from code before your eyes. The Algorave scene is fast-growing, informally coordinated from Sheffield, and reaching over 50 cities over five years.

At AlgoMech 2017 we aim to take Algorave to the next level, bringing together some of the best algorithmic (and mechanical) dance music producers and VJs, playing over Sheffield's fiendish DangerNoise soundsystem, with immersive projections covering the walls of Millennium Gallery. As with the rest of the festival we'll be mixing mechanisms with the algorithms, showcasing repetitive dance music made from handmade robots as well as live code.

As part of the Millennium Gallery "Meet the Maker" series, representatives from Bela Platform will have some hands-on demos of things that can be made with their open source system for building digital musical instruments, including the incredible D-Box, an instrument that has been designed to be hacked and reconfigured while it's played.

The Algorave scene is fast-growing around the world, with Sheffield a strong centre, building on its fine roots in electronic music history. For the AlgoMech Algorave we are teaming up with Millennium Gallery Live Lates, and mixing in some mechanical techno to spice up the algorithmic electronics. We'll be bringing together algorithmic and mechanical artists from UIQ, PC Music, Computer Club, Rephlex and NTS radio on one bill.. This has to be experienced!

Imagine a piece of fabric that can be tapped or swiped just like you would a touch screen? Or if sensors woven into the cover of your chair told you when you were slouching? Electronic textiles are where computer science, electrical engineering, textiles and design all come together. Becky Stewart will discuss its rise and how it could change the way we interact with the world around us, including during live performance.

This talk was awarded the annual Daphne Oram Lecture, and is generously supported by the British Science Association. The talk will run from 12 midday until 1pm, leading into a "Meet the Maker" session with Becky as part of the Millennium Gallery series until 2pm.

Becky Stewart is a Lecturer in the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science at Queen Mary University of London, working with e-textiles and signal processing to build interactive, body-centric wearable computing systems. These systems often incorporate performance, fashion, music and/or design. Becky grew up in Kalamazoo, Michigan in the US and currently lives in London in the UK.
