As we look back on the last few year of ShfWIT, it’s fair to say a lot has happened. Thankfully, there are more women in tech than when we first started, and we’ve been through a pandemic which has changed the way we all work, making the flexibility some women need more the norm. We’ve also had #metoo, which brought wider awareness of unconscious biases and behaviours still happening today best left in the past.
As we relaunch our monthly meetups, we want to know: what do you want the next five years of this community to look like? Join us on Tuesday 11th of June at Sheffield Tech Parks for a BYO Lunch and a chat about the future of ShfWIT with the community.
There will be tea, coffee and plenty of opinions, we can’t wait to see you all again!
Thanks to Sheffield Tech Parks for hosting us and Sheffield Digital for their support.
Agenda:
12:00 - 12:15 Coffee and Tea
12:15 - 13:00 Lunch and Chats
13:00 - 13:15 Notices and Networking
Sheffield Women in Tech are running a round table BYO lunch at Tech Parks on Thur 13th July to ask questions, share info and signpost.
We believe the answers are already there within the community, we just need to access great ideas and examples. Please join us for a lunchtime round table to ask questions, share your experience and join our community. This is a women only event, everyone welcome.
Hear from female founders on the highs and lows of starting, growing and running their own ventures.
Women make up just 4% of UK tech startup founders and under 17% of all active companies are led by women. During this event we want to shine a spotlight on women who are taking the path less trodden, be inspired by their stories and learn from their experiences.
Event Aims:
- Shine a spotlight on female founders in the city (and beyond)
- Inspire other women who are considering their own venture
- Provide honest insight into the highs and lows of the founder's journey
Format:
We'll be hearing from a panel of (3-4) female founders, all at different stages in their careers. Each will share their story and then take part in a Q&A/Panel Discussion - so come ready with your questions!
Speakers:
The event will be hosted by local award winning entrepreneur Anna Bollinger. Joining her will be a tour de force of other founders...to be announced in the coming weeks.
Whether you're considering start-up life or are simply curious - you would be most welcome to come along and join the conversation!

Sheffield Women in Tech are kicking off their season of events in style with High (Tech) Tea.
Come along and meet members of the community, hear about the events we have planned and how you can get involved.
Everyone is welcome, there will be tea and cake, and if you wish, you can make a donation to Macmillan Cancer Support as we're running this event as part of their World's Biggest Coffee Morning (except it's in the evening and it's tech-tea :-D )
Some of the team are even threatening to don aprons and bake! So please do come along and show your support.
ShfWIT seeks to be a friendly community where everyone feels welcome and safe.
During the event we will be adhering to the Sheffield Digital Code of Conduct. Please take a moment to read it.
As with all of our events you can interact as much or as little as you please, we're happy for you to do whatever makes you feel comfortable. If you need additional assistance please let us know.
What a year we've all had! Sheffield Women in Tech is taking a short break during August, so July will be our last event before the summer. We've booked Sheffield Technology Parks on 5th July from 17:30-19:30 for a special edition of Tech Tea: rebranded for one evening only as Tech Fizz!
As well as enjoying a glass of bubbles (non-alcoholic options available) and strawberries to get us in the mood for summer, we'll also be taking the opportunity to reflect on the events we've run over the past year, and look to the community to find out what you'd like to see us do in the coming year.
The event is open to all: come along, meet and chat with others, and have your say!
A big thank you to BJSS for sponsoring this event.
Join us for our final meetup before the summer break!

Our speakers for this event are:
Alyzande Renard, Learning Mentor and Sheffield Woman in Technology
Melissa Simmonds, Adult Autism Coordinator for Voluntary Action Sheffield (VAS) and the Sheffield Autism Partnership Network (SAPN), launched in July 2021.

This event is suitable for everyone, including those who are new to understanding autism and neurodiversity.
Audience members are advised that this event will make a general mention of domestic violence and sexual assault.
To accommodate the neurodiverse needs of our speakers, we will be accepting questions in advance and via the chatbox during the evening only and our speakers may be able to respond at the Q&A session at the end of the presentations. Attendees are welcome to send any questions they have in advance to shfwit@gmail.com.

An online event exploring how you can approach this challenging discussion from three different perspectives.
We have all heard the stats and seen the news: there's a gender pay gap. Women earn up to 28% less than their male colleagues in the same tech roles. While there are complex, structural forces at play we can all make the most of any opportunity to advocate for ourselves as we talk about our pay with employers.
Join us for a look at how you can approach negotiating your pay. We will take on three different perspectives that we hope will strengthen your hand and confidence when thinking about having this discussion: the recruiter, the employer and the personal coach.
We will be joined by three incredible local women who have expertise and advice to share from these different standpoints:
Louisa Harrison-Walker will use her extensive knowledge of and insight into the tech recruitment market to discuss why knowing your value is a powerful tool in your arsenal.
Cherry Limb is HR Manager at 3squared and understands that everything always comes down to people. She will use her experience to provide an employer perspective and remind us that there is another human being at the other side of this conversation.
Amanda Cookson, experienced and insightful coach and HR /Leadership consultant, will talk about how to have difficult conversations and ways you can help build your case. She will even share a toolkit that you can takeaway from the event.
We will hear from speakers before engaging in a panel discussion based on audience questions.
Event Timings:
5.30pm - Participant Entry and Informal Networking
5.45pm - Official Welcome and Introductions
5:50 - Introducing the gender pay gap
6.00 - Speakers in turn: Louisa Harrison-Walker, Cherry Limb and Amanda Cookson
6.30 - Your chance to ask the experts - panel discussion based on audience Q+A
7.00 - Notices (Participants to Contribute)
7:15 - Close

By popular demand we're going to be talking about money, money, money! We will be joined by a variety of experts and looking at pay equality and negotiating a raise. More info coming soon but for now...save the date!
We're kicking off next week with an informal in person gathering at the Birdhouse Tea Bar and Kitchen. Come join us for a cuppa and a chat after work. No agenda, no need to book, just turn up and enjoy meeting others in the ShfWIT community. Get in touch if you'd like us to look out for you.
Join us for an interactive evening exploring how we can all contribute towards creating work cultures where people feel safe to speak up about inappropriate behaviour, especially in relation to gender-based discrimination and sexual harassment. We all have a role to play in helping to break the silence!
We will be joined by Dr Sarah Brooks from Sheffield University Management School who specialises in organisational behaviour. Sarah will share her research and help us to think about what works and what doesn’t work when it comes to creating workplace environments where everyone feels safe to speak up.
Christine Rose and the team from Know the Line Sheffield will then facilitate a more practical workshop aimed at helping us to find our voice and know how to respond when we experience or witness sexual harassment in the workplace. In break-out groups we will explore a variety of hypothetical scenarios and how we might best respond.
❕ We recognise that this is a sensitive and potentially triggering topic for some and we are keen to create an environment where everyone feels safe. No-one will be forced to participate in break-out conversations and at no point will you be asked to share your own personal experiences.
Whilst some of our events are more tailored towards those who identify as female – this event will also be particularly relevant for anyone who simply wants to know how they can be a better ally to their female colleagues in a male-dominated tech world.

Sarah is a Lecturer in Organisational Behaviour at Sheffield University Management School. Sarah’s research focuses on understanding how employees can be better supported to speak up about things they are not happy with in the workplace. She is also an accredited professional coach helping professional females to find their authentic voice.

Failure comes before resilience – a special talk by Sonya Barlow
Description changed:
We are delighted to welcome Diversity Consultant and speaker Sonya Barlow to shfWIT to hear how to face failure and use it to our advantage.
About this Event
It’s January 2021… We made it through 2020 and the many challenges that entailed. We’re here and ready to take on 2021. But are we ready to accept failure?
It might sound like a negative way to start a new year, talking about failure, but Sonya Barlow (founder of the Like Minded Females Network, TEDxSpeaker, Podcast Host, Diversity Consultant & soon to be published Author – to name but a few achievements) will invite us to see failure as simply a 'temporary disruptor' - a necessary step in the growth of resilience.
Sonya will share with us her belief that failure is necessary, and that in the same way we train the different muscles in our body to learn, grow and strengthen - we must train our brain to think of failure as a new opportunity to learn, grow and strengthen. We will learn that resilience is our capacity to spring back from adverse situations. It's our flexibility, agility and adaptability.
With Sonya we will learn to embrace failure and build our resilience as we enter a New Year of new possibilities, please join us!

What would it look like for you to thrive at work (and not just survive) in 2020? Join us for a ShfWIT new year special where we will explore together how to flourish in the tech sector, prioritise wellbeing and level-up through training.
There will be space to reflect on your own goals for the year and opportunity to ask a panel of experts your work, wellbeing and training related questions e.g.
How do I ask for a raise?
How do I achieve that illusive work-life balance?
I’d like to get into programming – where should I start?
And as always there will be plenty of time for mingling and nibbles…
All welcome.
