We will be meeting at 57North Hacklab to bring together like minded people, discuss digital freedoms and explore the use of cryptographic tools.
Discuss digital rights issues that are in the news. Learn how you can help to protect your rights in a digital world. Bring a smartphone or laptop and browse the web anonymously, learn about these technologies and chat about the reasons we need them.
• "Do average people really need this kind of security? Yes. They may be planning a political campaign, discussing taxes, or having an illicit affair. They may be designing a new product, discussing a marketing strategy, or planning a hostile business takeover. Or they may be living in a country that does not respect the rights of privacy of its citizens. They may be doing something that they feel shouldn't be illegal, but is. For whatever reason, the data and communications are personal, private, and no one else's business." -- Bruce Schneier, Applied Cryptography - Second Edition (https://www.schneier.com/book-applied-2preface.html)

Electronic Voting Trials in Scotland discussions (w/ British Computer Society)
Description changed:
The Scottish Government have committed to trialling electronic voting as part of its digital strategy. In July 2018, Aberdeen City Council put out a procurement notice for an electronic voting system for Aberdeenshire Council and the Highland Council.
Electronic voting has been promoted as a way to engage a new generation of voters, but at what costs? Can electronic voting satisfy the requirements for a vote to be anonymous, verifiable, and secure? Open Rights Group have been an independent observer at trials of electronic voting in the United Kingdom and made up part of a group of security researchers that assessed the 2014 general election in Estonia. This event will see Open Rights Group present the results of that research, look at case studies from other parts of the world and discuss with British Computer Society members and ORG members the pressing questions for a trial of electronic voting:
What standards should underpin an electronic voting trial?
What identity attributes should be required for assurance on the system?

Come and meet new Scotland Director, Matthew Rice, and reconnect with ORG Aberdeen members, or come meet some for the very first time if you've never attended. The meetup is going to be a relaxed, informal affair. It's a chance for people with an interest in digital rights to meet each other and figure out how we can work together to protect and promote digital rights in Aberdeen and beyond.
The meeting is free to attend and all are welcome. Coming along to the event will not sign you up to run the group, but you will have the opportunity to speak to others who want to organise something and sign up to an email thread about ORG Aberdeen events.
Remember that you don't need to have any experience of campaigning to attend! Every seasoned campaigner was once just someone who cared about an issue, don't be put off by thinking you don't have the skills.
