The Scottish Government have committed to trialling electronic voting as part of its digital strategy. In July 2018, Aberdeen City Council put out a procurement notice for an electronic voting system for Aberdeenshire Council and the Highland Council.

Electronic voting has been promoted as a way to engage a new generation of voters, but at what costs? Can electronic voting satisfy the requirements for a vote to be anonymous, verifiable, and secure? Open Rights Group have been an independent observer at trials of electronic voting in the United Kingdom and made up part of a group of security researchers that assessed the 2014 general election in Estonia. This event will see Open Rights Group present the results of that research, look at case studies from other parts of the world and discuss with British Computer Society members and ORG members the pressing questions for a trial of electronic voting:

What standards should underpin an electronic voting trial?

What identity attributes should be required for assurance on the system?

Who should be involved the audit of the system?
