Securi-Tay

Scotland’s largest cyber-security conference, which is entirely organised by Ethical Hacking students, will be held at Abertay University this month

The fourth annual Securi-Tay conference will bring together over 100 delegates from education, industry and law enforcement. It is unique in the UK as the only student-led conference of its type, run by the Abertay Ethical Hacking Society.

Securi-Tay conference consists of a day of talks and discussions by industry leaders, academics and students from the Abertay’s Ethical Hacking degree courses.

The event has attracted support and sponsorship from major security companies including NCC Group, Tenable Network Security and Portcullis, as well as funding through the Scottish Informatics & Computer Science Alliance and Abertay University.

NoSQL – No Security?

CouchDB, MongoDB & Neo4j are all making names for themselves in the Big Data world. But behind these buzzwords, there is a very real and often overlooked threat. NoSQL Injection. For years Web Applications developers have been working hard to ensure that their inputs are sanitized, their strings escaped and applications secure.
But as more and more web developers move away from MySQL and other relational models toward graph and key store systems, are they falling into the same pitfalls as their peers did 10 years ago?
This talk will look at Big Data, Its uses, implementations, limitations and untimely, if Developers have adopted the same attitude to NoSQL Security as they have SQL Security.

Securi-Tay was started a year ago by a team of students on the Ethical Hacking and Countermeasures course at the University of Abertay. After attending different conferences, we noticed that there weren’t many security-focused conferences in Scotland. The aim was simple – an annual, student-led security conference in the heart of Scotland to get both students and industry communicating. While this is only the second year running, we wish to build on our success from the previous year and offer more talks - making Securi-Tay an event you will want to have in your calendar every year.
