Augmented Engineering Intelligence for Industrial Equipments in the Energy Secto
Description changed:
Augmented Engineering Intelligence for Industrial Equipments in the Energy Sector
Predicting failure is a very well known and difficult problem. There are good reasons for that - known failure modes are scarce, let alone unknown failure modes (dreaded “black swans”), capable of causing the most damage. Also, equipments generate immense streams of multidimensional data, representing highly connected systems, thus anomalous patterns can be easily missed by humans alone. The mostly unlabelled data makes it almost impossible to create an acceptable supervised ML model. Instead, we present an unsupervised deep learning approach, inspired and adapted by the works of Google on smart buildings, to create a set of Early Warning Notifications for industrial equipments.
Bio: Pedro Santos (https://www.linkedin.com/in/pedro-santos-784048193) is the Lead Data Scientist at Digital & Data (Total Energies UK). He is specialised in turning ideas into actionable business insights with machine learning. In 2021, the team which he is part of won the Oil & Gas UK Business Innovation Large Enterprise Award.

Just build it! Tips for making ML Engineering and MLOps Real
Data science and Machine Learning in an industrial setting are hard. The problems you have to solve are complex, the data landscape is challenging and you often don't have the freedom you would like to design experiments or create observational studies on real-world processes. This is before you even think about how to manage stakeholders, use cloud technologies, write software or wrap your solution up into a product that has to run predictions 24/7/365 and support business operations! In this talk, we reflect on many of the learnings Andy has gained through the past few years working in successful data science and machine learning engineering teams building operational products that create millions of dollars of value. In particular, Andy discusses how he thinks we can 'bootstrap' ML Engineering (MLEng) and MLOps practices in your organization.
Presenter - Andy McMahon
Machine Learning Engineering Lead , NatWest Group
Andy is a machine learning engineer and data scientist with experience of working in, and leading, successful analytics and software teams. His expertise centers on building production-grade ML systems that can deliver value at scale. Andy is currently an ML Engineering Lead at NatWest Group and was previously Analytics Team Lead at Aggreko. He has an undergraduate degree in theoretical physics from the University of Glasgow, as well as Masters and Ph.D. degrees in condensed matter physics from Imperial College London. In 2019, Andy was named Data Scientist of the Year at the International Data Science Awards. He currently co-hosts the AI Right podcast, discussing hot topics in AI with other members of the Scottish tech scene.
Rob Huggins, Director of Academy and Client Services at MBN Solutions | Data IQ 100 2019 & 2020 will be chairing the event.
Sometimes we operate in the shadows and our work stays unnoticed. We are passed for promotions and feel like there is no getting out of this dark corner.
Karen Jean-Francois, analytics manager and producer of the Women in Data podcast
has experienced this situation first hand.
Join her as she talks about the invisible performer and shares tips to help you be more visible and get the recognition you deserve.
As an analytics manager, Karen is passionate about how data science and analytics can support businesses and help them better understand their customers. While she finds digging into data fun, she believes that it comes with responsibility, and her uncompromising focus on data integrity enables her to build trust and strong relationships with stakeholders.
Most of all, she strives to help others craft their own path to personal and professional fulfilment. She believes that focusing on personal development and having access to role models is key to having a successful career – no matter what your definition of success is. This is why she created the Women in Data Podcast in partnership with Women in Data UK. Experimenting with a model or comparing a model's performance with other solutions is often a tricky task. Problems can include absence of an intuitive graphical interface and lack of an SDK that allows this work to be done neatly.
MLflow is a perfect solution. MLflow is an open-source project that covers all the aspects of an ML workflow, from model exploration to production and retirement. Easily integrated into any ML library, it can be run on the cloud and it allows an easy cross-team collaboration. For these reasons, MLflow has been widely used across industries, from Booking.com to Microsoft and Facebook.
In this talk, Stefano Bosisio will explore MLflow Tracking. Tracking allows data scientists to have an intuitive graphical interface to understand and immediately visualise their models' experiments performance and metrics. We will go through a Python SDK implementation of MLflow, to show not only how MLflow is easy to be integrated with custom-based products but also to give data scientists an easy interface to immediately experiment with their models.
Stefano Bosisio is a Machine Learning Engineer at Trustpilot in Edinburgh - https://www.linkedin.com/in/stefano-bosisio1
At Trustpilot, he looks for new solutions to help data scientists better scale up their models and land easily in production.
Before joining Trustpilot, Stefano worked for Sainsbury's Bank. His role involved bringing the bank to a more data-centric position, by creating new models for financial products and paving the road for a new ML infrastructure for model development and deployment.
Stefano holds a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Edinburgh. When he’s not working, Stefano enjoys playing the piano, painting, crocheting (lockdown skills), as well as travelling and getting better and better at baking.
You can read Stefano’s write up on the topic below.
Scale-up your models development with MLflow | by Stefano Bosisio | Nov, 2021 | Towards Data Science

How to Share Terabytes of Live Data with Delta Sharing
Description changed:
In this technical session DataBricks' Frank Munz, will introduce Delta Sharing, a Linux Foundation open source solution for sharing massive amounts of live data in a cheap, secure, and scalable way.
Delta sharing uses pandas or Apache Spark for the real-time exchange of large data sets, enabling secure data sharing across products for the first time. It leverages modern cloud object stores, such as S3, ADLS, or GCS, to reliably transfer large data sets. An open-sourced reference sharing service is available to get started.
Within the Databricks ecosystem, Unity Catalog implements the open source Delta Sharing protocol, so you can share data across organization regardless of system boundaries, compute platform or cloud provider.
This is a technical session with difficulty level easy/medium (L300).

Lakehouse : what it is and how can transform your company
Traditional EDW are good to store structure data, with a high cost per GB.
Traditional Data Lakes on the cloud are good to store unstructured data, not supporting classic ACID operations found on EDW.
At the same time Data lakes have lower cost per GB than a traditional EDW.
AI usually requires the combination of different sources structured and unstructured.
The traditional way to solve the shortcomings of these technologies is to combine them with difficult to main ETLs
Lakehouse is a new open architect that combines the best elements of EDW and Data Lakes. On top of open standards that allows costumes to never be vendor lock.

The Data Lab MSc Placement Programme Launch Event - 8th December @ 12pm
For the 5th consecutive year MBN are delighted to be the delivery partners for The Data Lab’s MSc Placement Programme.
Following the success of the Programme, we are looking to place even more students into industry than before and are hosting a virtual event to give organisations all the information that they need to take part in the Programme. We aim to give an overview of the Programme and answer any questions that you may have.
We are looking for industrial placement opportunities for 160 MSc Students. We have partnered with The Data Lab to provide 8 – 12 weeks summer placements in Scottish organisations as an option to all students on the Programme.
This collaborative Programme covers 29 Data Science and AI courses across 12 Scottish Universities.
The rules of the Programme have slightly changed this year- all placements need to have the ability to be undertaken on a remote basis. This opens the opportunity for SME’s/ start-ups, or even those with limited office space to get involved.
During this event, previous Host Organisations will share their experience with the Programme. We will also hear from a previous student who will you insight into her experience.
