The most frustrating part of being a Data Scientist and Analyst.
In this presentation, Dr Shorful Islam will discuss his theory that - how no matter how well you do a piece of analysis - the business does not always take on board your recommendations and insights.

Lakehouse : what it is and how can transform your company

Lakehouse : what it is and how can transform your company
Traditional EDW are good to store structure data, with a high cost per GB.
Traditional Data Lakes on the cloud are good to store unstructured data, not supporting classic ACID operations found on EDW.
At the same time Data lakes have lower cost per GB than a traditional EDW.
AI usually requires the combination of different sources structured and unstructured.
The traditional way to solve the shortcomings of these technologies is to combine them with difficult to main ETLs
Lakehouse is a new open architect that combines the best elements of EDW and Data Lakes. On top of open standards that allows costumes to never be vendor lock.

Is your business using your output - Presentation by Martin Thorn (Head of Data Science) - Standard Life Aberdeen - https://www.linkedin.com/in/martin-thorn
This event is part of the Scotland Fintech Festival - https://www.fintechscotland.com/scotland-fintech-festival/
In many ways these are the glory days of machine learning. More and more companies are building machine learning capability and every other company statement talks about data being critical to their survival.
There is a downside to this hype and enthusiasm - the need for real, actionable, measurable output. How do you measure the usefulness of machine learning? To me the most obvious answer is - does the business rely on your output?

Insight Through Innovation: Delivering Scalable Data Products With The Latest Cloud Tech
The pace of technological development means that is hard to keep track of the names of the latest data tools and techniques, never mind use them to build robust products that drive value for your business. In this talk we will introduce the concept of Aggreko's "Modern Data Platform", a connected series of cloud technologies and processes which together form our enterprise data product development and deployment environment. We will then share how we use this platform to create both Business Intelligence and Machine Learning solutions which can scale with the needs of the business, while also allowing for future innovations in technology to be incorporated and utilised as they come online. We will conclude with a detailed use case in both the BI and Machine Learning space.
Presenters.
Andy McMahon, Analytics Team Lead: Andy leads a team of data scientists and machine learning engineers who work on advanced analytics solutions for use across the business. The team utilise large scale cloud computing capabilities like Databricks and Azure Delta Lake to deliver bespoke algorithms for complex use cases like predictive maintenance.

Graham Morrow, Business Intelligence Manager: Graham’s team of BI developers and analysts deliver operational reporting supporting key business processes, metrics and KPIs to appropriate stakeholders and decision makers. His expertise in BI has helped to drive the reporting capabilities at Aggreko by utilising technologies like Power BI and Azure Synapse Analytics.
Harvinder Atwal - Chief Data Officer at Moneysupermarket Group (https://www.linkedin.com/in/harvindersatwal ) – will be talking on the subject of - DataOps: Delivering Agile Data Science.
This presentation will be followed by Q&A from the audience.
Harvinder has recently written a book on the subject - Practical DataOps: Delivering Agile Data Science at Scale
Event details.
Talk Abstract: DataOps: Delivering Agile Data Science. The majority of organisation fail to create business value from their investments in data. Most implementations are either high cost IT projects, local applications that are not built to scale for production workflows or laptop data insight projects that never impact customers. The key to adding value is to adapt and borrow principles from Agile, Lean and Dev Ops. However, Agile Data Science is not just about shipping working machine learning models, but starts with better alignment of data science with the rest of the organisation and its goals.
Bio: Harvinder Atwal leads a team of Data Scientists to deliver data-driven personalisation, develops the Data Strategy to support Advanced Analytics and defines Data Science best practice at MoneySuperMarket. Moneysupermarket.com is the UK’s most visited Price Comparison Website and has one of the largest customer databases in the UK with records for 23 million unique individuals. Harvinder was previously Insight Director for Tesco Clubcard at Dunnhumby and Senior Manager for Customer Strategy and Insights at Lloyds Banking Group. He is passionately interested in Data Science, Machine Learning, Big Data technologies and how they can be used to improve Customer Experience.

The “Art and Science” of Analytics and Data Science: We should all be like Leonardo
Point of the talk: This is drawn primarily from experiences in the domain of customer insight and customer experience. We think of analytics mainly as a hard ‘science’ but there is a growing importance to consider some more intangible sides to analytics: why do customers think the way they do (e.g. behavioural economics), why do stakeholders make decisions the way they do (e.g. influencing senior decision-makers)?
• What are some areas where the ‘art of analytics’ is often underplayed?
• What are some areas where the ‘science of persuasion’ is often underused?
• How can these be melded in interesting ways?
• Why do many firms fail to do this?
• What could you do about this in your teams / careers?
Presenter - Nick Hall - https://www.linkedin.com/in/nick-hall-3a2a5
For the last 6 years Nick has led the Barclays Analytics Centre of Excellence – a team of 140+ analytics and data science professionals who use analytics to grow the Barclays retail and business banking franchise as well as build data products derived from the bank’s transactional data.
He started life as a geek, when it was much less cool: pre-web and practically pre-PC. He spent 6 years at IBM and then 16 years as a strategy consultant building and deploying data capabilities for clients in financial services and the consumer goods sector (mainly beer). His focus was on analysing customer-level behaviour data and blending this with research-based insights – to grow revenues, manage for value, manage risk or optimise capital use.
Both his personal and professional interest now is in pursuing his ‘geeky origins’ and helping businesses drive more commercial and strategic value out of their data through the application of data science, AI, human creativity and managing the business decision-making process.

◆ Predicting Product Performance in the hands of the customer – Jeffrey Rodger, Staff Statistician
◆ The Manufacturing Data Map - David Morris, Staff Scientist Manufacturing Engineering
For many data scientists, the thrill and excitement of joining a start-up is what they have worked towards for much of their life to date. However, for others, the challenges of plying their trade in the context of a corporate strategy is regarded as even more fulfilling in that opportunities exist:
§ to deepen domain expertise
§ solve complex business problems
§ Create broad value to household name organisations
In some cases, such opportunities may not be mutually exclusive so join us on the 25th June at 12pm GMT for a discussion on the differences between deployment of data scientists in differing business models and what it means at a personal level for:
§ Career development and job satisfaction
§ Development of deeper data skill and domain expertise
§ Cultural differences and challenges that ensue
§ How to make the best of your career choices

Adding Commercial Value with Analytics and Data Science: Are you selling......
Description changed:
Adding Commercial Value with Analytics and Data Science: Are you selling buckets or mining gold?
Point of the talk: Whether you are running an analytics function, acting as a consultant / contractor or an individual data science professional – chances are you need to be adding commercial value with your analytics. But, just like in the California gold-rush – you can make money (add-value) by panning for gold, or you can make a good living selling buckets and shovels. Too often analytics gets side-tracked into providing models, dashboards, datasets etc. instead of monetizable insights. Why is this and how do you avoid it?
Key points covered:
• The importance of adding value through analytics
• Recognising the distinction of actually uncovering valuable insights (mining gold) versus building tools to help others do that (selling buckets)?
• Why it is so easy to get caught up in the “buckets business”?
• Why can it be dangerous / self-defeating (some war stories)?
• What can you do to ensure you are genuinely “mining for gold”?

Overcoming the challenges of data science deployment
Description changed:
Overcoming the challenges of data science deployment
In this webinar, Bellrock Technology Product Manager, Dr. David Bell, discusses how to overcome the challenges of data science deployment.
With 4 out 5 data science projects failing to make it into production, deployment is a key issue for the industry and will be a key area to generate ROI and unlock future investments across pretty much every market sector.
Spoiler alert! Deploying data science is hard.
Organisations have data siloed across a wide range of sources with a varied range of quality and accessibility. The models created are increasingly complex and written in languages that are unknown to many IT professionals (who have their day to day challenges). Then, to compound the pain, business users have exceptionally high levels of expectations for strong visualisations and real time insights delivered to their platforms of choice.
It is little wonder that Data Scientists end up spending most of their time piecing all of this together rather than doing what they are good at, building models for your organisation.
During this session David will discuss:
• Why is Data Science deployment so hard
• Expectations vs reality
• Overcoming the 5 main challenges
• What could a solution look like
Dr. David Bell, Product Manager, Bellrock Technology
David Bell has a PhD in Artificial Intelligence and is the Product Manager with Bellrock Technology. Having spent years developing and delivering data driven solutions in both academic and industrial contexts, he is now leveraging that experience to drive forward the product vision for Lumen, Bellrock Technology's intelligent deployment platform.
Bellrock Technology
Bellrock Technology is a software company based in Glasgow. The company was founded to help large organisations become data-driven. Our customers deploy their models utilising their live and static data to deliver maximum business value to their companies.
Bellrock Technology developed Lumen®, the world’s most advanced analytics deployment platform, in order to instantly turn trained data science models into live, useful data analytics. Its patented technology removes traditional integration and deployment challenges, automatically creating complex data-pipelines and making results immediately available to end users.
VIRTUAL EVENT: Why Collaboration is at the heart of Success in Data Science
Description changed:
Join us as we partner with MBN and GFK on 23rd April at 6pm GMT to bring you a virtual event where we explore the topic ‘Why Collaboration is at the Heart of Success in Data Science’.
EVENT INFO:
As Data Science continues to become a focus for an increasing number of enterprises, many organisations are realising just how expansive the subject is and the critical dependency on alignment with other new and emerging technologies and systems such as machine learning and artificial intelligence.
Clearly, such activities depend upon talent to ensure full potential is achieved. Many enterprises underestimate the importance of having the right people and skills in place to maximise the prospects on offer. But this is only the start. Beyond such skills and technologies, a real cultural shift must be achieved. Collaboration is at the heart of this shift.
Strategy, Data Engineering, Product Development, Statistical Modelling and Data Science require a string team-based ethic matched with aligned goals, shared vision and delivery excellence to deliver outcomes that matter.
Due to the current circumstances with COVID-19 and postponing the original event to be held in London, we have decided to reschedule and hold a Virtual event. We hope you can join us on Zoom!

Description changed:
We've been informed that ONE Tech Hub, our venue are closing Studios One and Two until the end of April 2020.
This event will not go ahead on the planned date. We're looking at options such as running it at the May date, assuming we get an all clear for then. We will announce that ASAP.
=================================
This will be a joint event with the Project Data Analytics group who are now running their own meet-ups in Aberdeen
Pizza, beer and networking 6.30pm. Speakers from 7pm.
Talk 1 - "Can we reinvent how we deliver projects by leveraging data?" - Stephen Ashley / Andrew Buchan and Martin Paver
Imagine a future where we can securely pool project delivery data for the benefit of all. Where we reduce the barriers to entry for innovators. Where we begin to value the hard won experience that is codified in data and facilitate access to data to help drive AI based insights. The Oil and Gas Authority, Oil and Gas Technology Centre and Projecting Success will be sharing some insights into the pioneering work that they have been doing on an oil and gas project analytics data trust and their efforts to make this vision a reality. They will also provide an update on parallel work that is being conducted within the construction sector. If successful, it could facilitate a transformation in how we deliver projects, from new installations through to decommissioning.
Stephen Ashley is Digital Solution Centre Manager at the Oil and Gas Technology Centre
Andrew Buchan is Senior Project Advisor at the Oil and Gas Authority
Martin Paver is CEO of Projecting Success, an SME with a passion for using data to transform how we deliver projects.
