Docker Swarm, Kubernetes, Mesos, Nomad... schedulers are becoming the craft beer of these days, but, when should I run Kubernetes? when is Docker Swarm a good solution? what about Mesos? can we write it off already?
During this talk, we will see the pros & cons of using one or another scheduler. We will give a set of use cases and constraints on when to chose one or another or more than one!
There will be a live demo using Docker Swarm and Kubernetes. We will create, run and update a few containers in both systems and will see a live example of the differences between both platforms.

SPECIAL PROMOTION for Kubernetes in a Day
Kubernetes in one dayCome and learn docker and Kubernetes with me!
This course aims to baseline and accelerate your kubernetes and docker knowledge. We start from zero and using examples we will cover all the elements and functionalities that make kubernetes such a great platform to develop distributed systems.
As usual - ensure you arrive before 1830, or entry cannot be guaranteed.
Agenda
1800 - Pizza, Beer, Chat
1830 - Portainer.io by Anthony Lapenna (@Tony_Lapenna)
1930 - One for the road
Portainer.io
Portainer.io is a software company based in Auckland, New Zealand. It offers a user interface for Docker called Portainer. This UI was born after the feeling that there was a need for IT infrastructure technicians, having no or a poor knowledge with Docker, to have a tool helping them use Docker. This is Portainer motto: keep it simple. As simple to use as it is to deploy, it allows you to manage Docker standalone hosts, Docker Swarm standalone clusters as well as Docker clusters using Swarmkit (Swarm mode). It is available on Linux, Windows & Mac. The talk will present Portainer.io and the software, it will also include a quick comparison with the existing solutions (Rancher, Shipyard...) and a feature analysis. It will end with a live demo of the software.
• 6:30pm - Introducing Docker InfraKit by Dan Finneran (@thebsdbox
• 7:30pm - Wrap up / Pub
Thanks to our amazing sponsors, Altia Solutions and SkyScanner; without their support, this event wouldn't be possible.
Introducing Docker InfraKit
Dan Finneran (HPE EMEA - Software Defined Infrastructure)
This session will provide an introduction into the new Open Source toolkit from Docker that is designed to Create, Manage and provide Self-Healing Infrastructure. The session will start with an overview as to why InfraKit was needed, to discussing the InfraKit architecture and plugin design. The session will then follow with a demonstration of InfraKit providing all the afore mentioned functionality with Infrastructure and then closing with where InfraKit is today and where it is heading in the future.
6:00pm - Pizza / Networking 6:30pm - How Containers Actually Work by Keith Sharp
This talk will present a deep dive into the Linux kernel technologies that underpin containers. You will learn how processes, namespaces, control groups, kernel security features, and union filesystems were combined by Docker to launch a revolution in the way we build, distribute, and run applications. At the end of the Talk you will understand why containers are not just “light weight virtual machines”, but are more flexible and powerful
Join us for our local edition of the Docker Global Mentor Week!
Docker Glasgow will be taking part in Docker's "Global Mentor Week" event. As we've done a few workshops in prior months, we'll be offering multiple rooms at this event:
Room #1 - Two talks on intermediate to advanced Docker use-cases (TBC)
Room #2 - Docker Mentor Week Workshop (Introductory / Beginner)
Docker Global Mentor Week is your opportunity to #learndocker. Right now, Docker is working on self paced online labs that will be available through LearnDot. One lab will be for beginners and one lab will be for intermediate users. Docker mentors will be on hand at this event to help you as you work through the self paced materials.
Are you an advanced user? We strongly encourage Docker users of all skill levels to attend! We need a network of mentors who understand the Docker platform to answer any questions that newcomers may have.
Please arrive before 7pm - entry cannot be guaranteed after due to building security.
6:30pm - Pizza / Networking
7:00pm - What's new in Docker Land (@rawkode and @GJTempleton)
Guy & I will be walking you through all the latest developments in Docker Land, including Docker Engine 1.12, Docker Compose 1.8, and Docker for Mac and Windows.
Also well as these Docker updates, we'll be providing a quick review of DockerCon 2016 and highlighting some of the best talks for you to watch in your own time.
