Building Cross-Platform Server-Side Data APIs

Front ends are cool but mostly useless without data. Sure, some of your data sources provide REST APIs so you can just write queries directly against them but that is so old school. Instead, you can build back end APIs that address the specific data needs of your web application and relieve front end devs from tangling with database schema, query syntax and other distractions. In this session you’ll learn the basics of creating a back end API as well as some smart architectural guidance to make moving data between your front end and your data store. We'll start with an ASP.NET Core Web API, EF Core and a relational database, then look at a data API built with Azure Functions to support a Cosmos DB document database.

Mapping DDD Domain Types with EF Core

Entity Framework half-heartedly supported DDD patterns. But the new-from-scratch EF Core has brought new hope for DDD practitioners to map your well-designed domain classes to a database, reducing the cases where a separate data model is needed. EF Core is very DDD friendly, even supporting things like fully encapsulated collections, backing fields and the return of support for value objects. In this hands we'll review some well-designed aggregates and explore how far EF Core goes to act as the data model between your domain classes and your data store.

In his talk 'Alexa open seeing eye', Jon will be walking us through the creation of an Alexa skill, from planning intents and utterances through to connecting to a visual learning AI. Using C# end-to-end through .NET core and Xamarin, Jon will show how to connect Alexa to complex backend systems, including reading data from Azure and using some of its awesome shortcuts to train an AI. Not only will we have a working Alexa skill by the end of the talk, but we’ll also have trained a visual learning AI to recognise a couple of the Scottish Developers team.

An autonomous collective of courageous and fearless geeks gathered along in a freshly created duchy of perpetually horded meeting rooms and joined forces into an unstoppable mob of programming.

Their sight: the land of agile orthodoxy. Their weapon: asking why (usually at least five times). Their plan: No Kan-, no -Ban, but a sacred map of all their capabilities and tasks, the Panopticon.

How many pits of success have they already conquered? Will their valiant march to sustainable delivery arrive at the pinnacle of realised business value?

Sebastien Lambla has been involved in software development since receiving his first web browser, back in the days of Netsape Navigator 1.2. After a few years of hacking on javascript, he turned his attention to the .net platform, on which he would spend the next few years building software in many companies. Seb Rose is an independent software developer, trainer and coach based in the UK. He specialises in working with teams adopting and refining their agile practices, with a particular focus on delivering software through the use of examples.
He first worked as a programmer in 1980 writing applications for estate agents and solicitors in compiled BASIC on an Apple II. He has worked with many mainstream technologies since then, for many well-known companies, such as Amazon, IBM, NCR, HBOS, Standard Life and Aegon. He is a regular conference speaker (ACCU, XPDay, Agile North, Developer Day Scotland, Agile on the Beach, Lean Agile Scotland) as well as a contributing author to O’Reilly’s “97 Things Every Programmer Should Know”

It's harder than ever to predict the load your application will need to handle in advance, so how do you design your architecture so you can afford to implement as you go and be ready for whatever comes your way. It's easy to focus on optimizing each part of your application but your application architecture determines the options you have to make big leaps in scalability. In this talk we'll cover practical patterns you can build today to meet the needs of rapid development while still creating systems that can scale up and out. Semantics Matter

Jon Skeet is a Java developer for Google in London, but he plays with C# (somewhat obsessively) in his free time.

He loves writing and talking about C#, and the third edition of "C# in Depth" was published earlier this year. Writing less formally, Jon spends a lot of time on Stack Overflow... where "a lot" is an understatement. Give him a puzzle about how C# behaves which gets him reaching for the language specification, and Jon is a happy bunny.

Semantics matter

I've always been pedantic around things like terminology, but in the last few years I've become almost obsessed with the meaning of data - partly because I've seen how much trouble we get ourselves into when we use it inappropriately.

In this session I'll explore some examples (mostly from Stack Overflow) of where a failure to consider the meaning of data carefully enough has caused problems, see what a rich type system can do for you, and imagine what might happen if we actually went overboard on the idea. What's the sweet spot, and how can it be applied right now?
