This meet-up will be Lean Agile Edinburgh’s last meet-up of the year and for a change we are going to make this one a real life, in person event!
We’ve booked a good sized function room in the Outhouse in Broughton street, which is very central and is a 10 min walk from Waverley station. We’ll be limiting RSVPs around 60% off the room’s capacity to ensure that there is plenty space for everyone. Please can you ensure that you keep your RSVP up to date, as we have a limited number of spaces
The evening will be fairly informal and a chance for everyone to discuss any Lean/Agile topics or questions that are on your mind and/or share knowledge with fellow Lean Agile Edinburgh members. We’d love to see you there and you are very welcome regardless of your experience with Agile - from complete newbie to seasoned Agilist :-)
The Agenda for the evening will be roughly as follows:
6.45-7.00 - Arrival
7.00-7.15 - Introduction, welcome and shout outs
7.15-7.45 - Lean Coffee in small groups (*)
7.45-8.00 - BREAK
8.00-8.30 - Lightning talks and/or a Liberating Structure (**)
8.30 - Depart, or stay for a drink and a chat
(*) If you’ve not heard of Lean Coffee before it involves writing down your discussion topics / questions on postits, voting for the ones that interest you the most, then discussing the topics in a small group based on the votes for 5 minute intervals. It’s a great way to learn new things and meet people!
(**) We hope to have a couple of lightning talks - if you have something to share and would like to do a 5-10 min lightning talk, please get in touch with us. If we don’t have any talks organised we’ll do a liberating structure instead. You can read more about these at LiberatingStructures.com
This is our first in person event since the pandemic started and because it is mostly interactive it won't be live streamed. Next year we expect to be slowly returning to in person events, which will be live streamed where possible.
VERY IMPORTANT: Only RSVP if you are going to attend this in person event. If you plans change, please update your RSVP to "No" immediately. Please avoid a "no show" or a last minute "no". This will help the organisers and other members immensely - Thank you!

Hearts & Mind vs Hard Facts - Tales from the trenches
Description changed:
This month we're happy to have Mick Barry, Head of platform operations at Nucleus financial, join us to talk about his experiences of overcoming resistance to change
Hearts & Mind versus Hard Facts - Tales from the trenches delivering Lean digital transformation
While my old school sci-fi enthusiasm would have me think Resistance is futile, we are nowadays seeing that not only is resistance to hard facts and data led decisions more and more common, it's also proving to be fairly effective to preventing change happening successfully. In this session I'd like to talk about my experiences of trying to create a new transformation team and our attempts to deliver transformative change and the, often unexpected, challenges we've faced along the way.
Bio: Mick Barry, Head of Platform Operations, Nucleus Financial Services
Experienced technology leader with over 20 years of software and change delivery experience in the financial services industry. Father of 3 so also skilled in small people management, conflict resolution, Disney Princesses and Lego.
This month we are proud to have Michael Bell, Agile Team Coach, Paypal, come to share with us the importance of slack in our teams, plans and lives because every system requires slack. It allows for change, growth and reflections. Especially in the face of uncertainty. This talk will take us through what slack is and why it’s important to have it in every aspect of our lives.
The Presentation with time for questions and discussion will last about an hour, as we try to replicate the in person experience we can keep going a little longer if some smaller groups wish to keep discussing.
This month we are delighted to have Sathpal Singh speaking on social leadership. This is a 3-part talk to provoke thought and reflection around the changing face and nature of leadership in the social age.
Abstract:
Leadership comes in many forms. Sath will share his journey into "Social Leadership", its potential and how he adopted it's mindset and behaviours whilst building and nurturing a knowledge sharing community of engineers across a population of 000s in the financial services sector. He will cover what makes a Social Leader, what characterises them and why are they needed more than ever. We are in the Social Age!
More details:
The talk outlines some familiar leadership styles before going deeper into what Social Leadership is, what characteristics and behaviours making Social Leaders and how social leadership behaviours are developed.
As we see our life and work landscape alter drastically as a consequence of the global pandemic the world is crying out for more great social leadership. This talk explains why and outlines what this looks like in theory and practice.
Audience takeaways from this session:
• What is the Social Age
• What is Social Leadership
• What do Social Leaders look like
• How does one develop as a Social Leader
• How this can be applied in practice
Bio:
Sath operates at the intersection of Engineering and Agile, with a focus on people, culture and communities. Having started his career as a Software Engineer, Sath has moved from hands-on developer roles into management and leadership and over the last 20 years has experienced numerous industries and delivered a range of programs and products for international clients and global brands.
Sath has a number of voluntary roles over and above his day job in the banking sector and is currently Organiser at Future of Work Scotland, Chair of the BCS Agile Methods group and sits on the CMI Scotland board, as their Communications Lead. Mental models for team effectiveness with Zane Cunningham
Description changed:
For our June event, Zane Cunningham (https://www.linkedin.com/in/zanecunningham/) will be giving a talk on mental models for team effectiveness. Zane has experience working with teams in the automotive and aerospace industries, in lean manufacturing and software development. In his talk, Zane will share some of his favourite mental models that help teams improve and collaborate. There will be time for Q&A at the end of Zane's talk.
As has been the norm for our meetups over the past year, this event will be online so we hope to see some of our international guests come along! Sadly, it's still BYO for pizza and drinks but here's hoping that we'll get a face to face meetup soon!
Hope to see you there!
If you would like to speak at any event or facilitate a workshop/activity, please get in touch with the organisers.
It’s been 12 months since John Catnach joined Exizent as their first technical hire. During this talk John will cover a variety of topics including:
- His background, drivers and goals for a green field team
- Building a team during a pandemic
- Delivery challenges - tech debt v customer value
- Remote working
We won’t be doing any breakout sessions this time but there will be plenty of time for Q&A
