CodeUp Sheffield is a mentoring program for adults who would like to learn how to code for free. Once a month we get together to learn from each other, sharpen our skills and enjoy being in a space where everyone is immersed in code!
There are many resources out there that help you to teach yourself to code, but sometimes there is no substitute for the insight and guidance that another person can give. Our group consists of coders with a wide range of experience, and our aim is to facilitate mentoring between more experienced and less experienced coders.
All you have to bring is a laptop and some coding to get on with, such as a project, a book, or some online tutorials. If you are starting completely from scratch, we will try to guide you towards some learning resources. Please try to install any relevant software in advance, but if you need assistance with this, we are happy to help.
Please RSVP as soon as possible, using your full name (to make it easier for reception to check you in on arrival). If you have RSVPed and are subsequently unable to come, please change your RSVP so that someone else can have your place.
If you can't wait until the event to start sharing interesting coding stuff and learning from each other, you can join our Slack workspace at the below link! If you like, you can introduce yourself in the -intros channel.
Our website is now live: codeupshf.github.io
And we also have a GitHub organisation: github.com
We will be using it to host source code for workshops and collaborative documents for the group. In particular, please take a look at our proposed Code of Conduct (github.com), which is currently open for discussion (see the repository for details). Please also see our policies document (github.com), which has a pull request open with the first few proposed policies (github.com).
The purpose of this approach is to give everyone the opportunity to have a voice in how the group is run. If you cannot participate in the discussion on GitHub or wish to comment anonymously, please write to the organiser on Meetup or Slack.
Many thanks to Sheffield Technology Parks for providing the venue. Please leave them a review on Google Maps!

About CodeUp Sheffield
CodeUp is an open, friendly and supportive learning environment where any adult can learn digital skills for zero financial cost, and supported by volunteer mentors. Once a month we intend to provide a workspace for people with little to no programming skills to come and learn the basics, usually run as a drop in session. Our sessions will be suitable for absolute beginners, people with basic skills who need support to develop them, and even for people with intermediate or advanced skills who just want to come along to a space where everyone is immersed in code!
