IGDA Scotland 2017 AGM and Marioke powered by Unreal Engine

As the year starts to wind up for the holidays, and with our Board of Directors elections underway, you're invited to join us from 19:00 on Friday 17th of November in Dundee to reflect on what our community has accomplished over the course of the last year, and what the coming year may bring.

Just like any of our other events, the AGM is open to anybody interested in game development in Scotland. You're a part of the wider community, whether you're an IGDA member or not, so we heartily encourage you to come along, share your views and have an impact. The Annual General Meeting is a chance for us to summarise everything the chapter has done in the last year, discuss plans for next year, and share your thoughts on what you think we should be doing differently as your representatives.

At this year's AGM we are really excited to bring you a night of Marioke powered by Unreal Engine! Thank you to our wonderful sponsors at Epic and the Marioke Team for making it happen.

What is Marioke?

Marioke is a night of karaoke classics rewritten to be about videogames. If you’ve never been to Marioke just imagine it as a karaoke night in an alternate universe; one where popular culture is entirely defined by games. The rules for each evening are simple, just like karaoke: sing your heart out, whether you can sing or not, and support the people on stage like they’re rock stars. Attendees pick a song from the songlist and sign up with the team at the front. When their names are called they come on stage with the Marioke team ready to back them up, and four minutes later they leave as heroes.

While there are in-jokes aplenty (“Hello” is about Halo, “Purple Rain” about Heavy Rain and “Common People” is a song about a PC gamer who wants to live life like Console People), the lyrics are broad enough to ensure you don’t need to be obsessed with videogames to enjoy Marioke. “I’m a Believer” is about Windows mainstay Minesweeper; “Take On Me” recalls platform classic Donkey Kong. Videogames are for everyone now and so, it turns out, are stupid songs and stupid jokes.
