Please join us at the launch of Open Rights Group Leeds!
We formed in response to the continued erosion of our rights to privacy and freedom of expression, through legislation such as the Investigatory Powers Act and the proposed Digital Economy Bill.
To get things started we will be discussing the current state of digital rights, the challenges ahead and what we can do as a group to make a difference. We would love to hear about your ideas, so please come along with plenty if you can!
To set the scene beforehand we will be showing the excellent short documentary 'The Haystack' by Scenes of Reason, a real life investigation into 21st century surveillance in the UK.
We will also be providing a brief overview of some of the free tools that you can use to protect your privacy in the age of global mass surveillance. This will be a taster for the privacy workshops that we intend to run in the near future.
Event details, timings etc:
The event will be in the upstairs function room, we will ask if we can put up signs, but please ask at the bar if you need pointing in the right direction.
We will be showing the documentary from 18:30, so please arrive from about 18:15 onwards so that you have time to get a drink etc.
The talks and discussion will start from about 19:15 after a quick break. We have the function room until 20:00, but we can continue the discussion in the bar for those who would like to.
We have enquired about the venue providing some light snacks, subject to our rather modest budget and likely numbers. We will see what we can do and provide an update as soon as we know.
It would be great if you could join us. We will miss our civil liberites when they are gone, so lets make 2017 the year we stood up and really made our voices heard.
