BCS Glasgow: March Meeting: Current Research Projects and Future Trends in Virtual and Augmented Reality

The expansive revolution of VR headsets has recently introduced VR in everyday life primarily for entertainment purposes. A plethora of applications and systems however have - for some years now - been in development, focusing mostly in the use of Virtual and Augmented reality in the amelioration/enhancement of everyday activities, out-with the realm of entertainment. This lecture aims to present some of the existing projects currently undertaken at University level and their potential applications in the wider community. Future trends and projected expectations for these technologies in the next decade will also be discussed.
Professor Vassilis Charissis(BSc(Hons), MPhil, PhD, MIET) is a Professor of Human Computer Interaction at Glasgow Caledonian University, Director of Virtual Reality and Simulation Laboratory (VRS Lab) and Research Leader of the Visual Affective and Pervasive Research Group (VAPS). He holds a BSc (Hons) in Technology of Graphics Arts and Mechanical Engineering, from the Technical and Educational Institute of Athens, Greece, an MPhil in Computing -Advanced 2D/3D Motion Graphics and Virtual Prototyping and a PhD in Computing in the area of Human Machine Interfaces and automotive Head-Up - Display systems, the latter two from the University of Glasgow, UK. He is also the recipient of two international first places for prototype design and engineering in the automotive industry competitions for FIAT and Opel respectively and holds two patents in advanced biomimetic automotive engineering. Professor Charissis has extensive industry experience as he developed prototype vehicles and HCI systems for Alfa Romeo, Lancia, FIAT, Ford US, Suzuki US, Opel, QinetiQ, Thales, and Fisher Defence Submarines. His work has received funding from SFC, EPSRC, RCPSG, RCSEd, NHS, ARUK, and NHS Education Scotland (NES) His research track record includes more than 100 publications and 65 successfully completed projects. Professor Charissis has served as an international expert reviewer for simulation proposals for the National Research Council of Canada and expert reviewer for development of advanced simulation laboratories for the Canada Foundation for Innovation | Fondation canadienne pour l'innovation
