Apologies for the lull in group activity after the huge success of our packed out hustings!
To make up for it we have two great events in one fantastic evening for our September Meetup: a talk AND workshop from Open Rights Group's staff about fighting the Snoopers' Charter!
The talk is open the public but the workshop has limited spaces, so you will need to sign up on eventbrite. If there are extra spaces on the night, we will let you know.
6.30 to 7.30pm
Talk + Q&A: Open Rights Group's Executive Director Jim Killock - 'Fighting the Snoopers' Charter'
Jim has been ORG's Director since January 2009. He has led campaigns against three strikes and the Digital Economy Act and pervasive government Internet surveillance.
He will be talking to us about how we can stop the return of the Snoopers' Charter:
'The Government is expected to announce the new Investigatory Powers Bill (a return of the Snoopers’ Charter) in late Autumn.
It is likely to extend surveillance powers for police and compel internet companies such as Virgin, BT and Sky to collect data on customers and make it available for automated use.
Rather than keeping surveillance to targeted monitoring of actual suspects, it would shift suspicion onto everybody and data could be used to determine whether you look suspicious or not.
This would be a profound change in the relationship between citizen and state.'
You do not have to sign up to attend that talk, that is open to the public.
Break: 7.30 to 7.45pm
7.45 to 9.00pm
Workshop: Talking About Surveillance
I'm Local Groups Co-ordinator at ORG as well as the Brighton organiser and I'll be running a workshop on how you can talk to your MP, answering questions like:
- Why Should I talk to my MP?
- How Do I Get a Meeting?
- What Should I Say?
I will be giving attendees their own copy of a special briefing pack that we've produced with information on the background to the Snoopers' Charter, arguments used to justify it and how you can respond.
You'll come away from the workshop ready to talk to anyone about surveillance.
There are only 25 spaces for the workshop so please sign up on eventbrite.
Please do let us know if you will be there, it makes our roles as organisers much easier to know how many to expect. :)
See you there,
Lydia

The Government is expected to announce new surveillance legislation next month, the Investigatory Powers Bill, that is almost certain to increase surveillance powers, threatening our privacy once again.
Open Rights Group are busy preparing to fight back as part of Don’t Spy On Us, a coalition of organisations defending free speech, privacy and digital rights.
We want to make sure as many people as possible can get involved in the campaign.
So we are running the training session ‘How To Think Like a Campaigner’ with the Campaign Director of Don’t Spy On Us, Mike Harris.
Learn how to campaign like a professional with insider advice from the Director of the most influential surveillance campaigns in the UK. Among others, Mike has worked on the Libel Reform campaign which secured the passage of the Defamation Act in 2012.
7.00 - 7.30pm - Thinking Like A Campaigner with Mike Harris
Understand the strategy to fight against increasing surveillance and by looking at previous campaign victories, find out how we can win one today.
7.30 - 8.30pm - Campaigning Against Surveillance
Get involved with planning the strategy for the rest of the campaign by creating your own winning campaign action.
Entry is free and open to the public.
See you there,
