Data science company Effini, and INGAME, the creative research and development centre in Dundee, present Designing With Data - an exploration of the use of data in the rapidly evolving global videogames market.
With the war for attention becoming ever fiercer, how can game developers ensure their games compete? Does designing with data mean creativity is dead? Do programmers, artists and producers now have to become data scientists?
In a world driven by data, where does fun fit in?
If you are involved in designing, developing, deploying, studying, teaching or writing about games (or data), this event is for you.
Our keynote speaker, Luke Dicken, the Director of Applied AI for Zynga will explore how game developers use data in the age of Artificial Intelligence.
We then welcome an expert panel from Scotland’s games industry for a lively debate on how data is being used within the local sector.
Keynote
Beyond "Data-Driven" - Reimagining Game Development for the AI Age
Zynga pioneered the idea of Data-Driven game development at a time when analytics wasn't a common place thing within the industry. These days though, it's hard to get away from headlines about Big Data and the AI Revolution - Analytics has become commonplace and vendors queue up to provide easily integrated SDKs. Everyone has data, everyone calls themselves "Data-Driven" - but what comes after that? Join Dr. Luke Dicken as he returns home to Scotland to explore the Galaxy Brain of what lies beyond simple Data-Driven game development, and the implications it has for game design and creativity more generally.
Speaker
Dr. Luke Dicken is Director of Applied Artificial Intelligence at Zynga Inc where he leads a team driving innovation at the intersection of AI, Analytics, Game Development and Computational Creativity. Luke’s long term passion lies in using AI and data-centric tools to empower game creators to provide engaging and immersive experiences and democratise game development through technology. He was named as one of Develop magazine’s “30 Under 30” for 2013, and was listed as the #1 most influential person in game analytics in 2018, but hasn’t found a subtle way to work either of these into a bio.

Waracle in conjunction with the Data Lab and Brightsolid are delighted to host an evening with Chris Neumann, CEO and Founder at Commonwealth Ventures, to discuss how to raise money and connect with US and Silicon Valley expertise, without having to open an office there! Hear from Chris how the Valley and US VC’s think and key tips for pitching. This event will cover everything you need to know about how to raise Silicon Valley VC money.
As with all our events the evening will be very informal encouraging everyone to get what they need out of the discussion – a really key opportunity to hear how non-capital cities, such as Dundee, can build a thriving start/up and scale-up tech scene.
Queer Code Scotland is a new meetup bringing together LGBTQ+ people with an interest in technology. We have so far had meetups in Edinburgh and Glasgow, and will be expanding to events in other locations across Scotland in the coming months.
In our first Queer Code Scotland field trip, we'll be visiting the "Hello, Robot." exhibition at the V&A in Dundee, then going to Duke's Corner for food, drink and chat afterwards. If you've already seen the exhibit or can't make it that early, you can opt just to join us in the pub afterwards, from around 4.
Meet at 13.30 next to the V&A logo in the pool outside the entrance. After viewing the robot exhibition, feel free to look around the other galleries. We will then assemble and head to Duke's Corner, which is about half a mile away, near the main University of Dundee Campus.
Entry to the exhibit is £11 full price, £9 concessions if booked online in advance - £1 more on the door. Attendees will also need to cover their own food and drink and transport.
If you're travelling from outside Dundee, the best trains stopping at Dundee are:
11.30 Edinburgh Waverley to Aberdeen (arrives 12.35)
12.02 Edinburgh Waverley to Arbroath (arrives 13.22)
10.45 Glasgow Queen Street to Edinburgh, change at Haymarket to Aberdeen (arrives 12.35)
11.38 Glasgow Queen Street to Aberdeen (arrives 13.06)
Off peak returns are £30-40, though you can get it cheaper by prebooking singles for specific trains.
You can post on the event if you're offering/looking for a car share.

IGDA Scotland 2017 AGM and Marioke powered by Unreal Engine
Description changed:
As the year starts to wind up for the holidays, and with our Board of Directors elections underway, you're invited to join us from 19:00 on Friday 17th of November in Dundee to reflect on what our community has accomplished over the course of the last year, and what the coming year may bring.
Just like any of our other events, the AGM is open to anybody interested in game development in Scotland. You're a part of the wider community, whether you're an IGDA member or not, so we heartily encourage you to come along, share your views and have an impact. The Annual General Meeting is a chance for us to summarise everything the chapter has done in the last year, discuss plans for next year, and share your thoughts on what you think we should be doing differently as your representatives.
At this year's AGM we are really excited to bring you a night of Marioke powered by Unreal Engine! Thank you to our wonderful sponsors at Epic and the Marioke Team for making it happen.
What is Marioke?
Marioke is a night of karaoke classics rewritten to be about videogames. If you’ve never been to Marioke just imagine it as a karaoke night in an alternate universe; one where popular culture is entirely defined by games. The rules for each evening are simple, just like karaoke: sing your heart out, whether you can sing or not, and support the people on stage like they’re rock stars. Attendees pick a song from the songlist and sign up with the team at the front. When their names are called they come on stage with the Marioke team ready to back them up, and four minutes later they leave as heroes.
While there are in-jokes aplenty (“Hello” is about Halo, “Purple Rain” about Heavy Rain and “Common People” is a song about a PC gamer who wants to live life like Console People), the lyrics are broad enough to ensure you don’t need to be obsessed with videogames to enjoy Marioke. “I’m a Believer” is about Windows mainstay Minesweeper; “Take On Me” recalls platform classic Donkey Kong. Videogames are for everyone now and so, it turns out, are stupid songs and stupid jokes.
Dr Matthew Davis from Wittin will be talking about "The Public Data Gold Rush: Our Journey to Become the General Store", and the usual excellent networking opportunities will be available. Also beer.
IGDA Scotland October 2017: Past, Present and Future of the Games Industry
Description changed:
Where is the Scottish games industry at and where does it need to be?
We'll be hosting a round table to fully discuss the biggest issues we face in the industry. Funding? Business support? Diversity? Mentoring? Anything you'd like to bring up at all, we'll discuss.
Come along to our special event where we want to hear from YOU and start a dialogue about the past, present and future of the Scottish games industry.
As always, we will have an open floor for announcements before the round tables kicks off. So if you have any news you'd like to share then feel free to come down and do so! We'll also be opening up to general networking after the round tables.

FutureScot is pleased to announce Digital Cities 2017 - a series of policy conferences taking place across Scotland this summer - kicking off with Dundee and Perth on June 1.
Aimed at policy, academic, technology and business leaders, six half-day events will take place in Dundee and Perth // Aberdeen // Glasgow // Stirling // Edinburgh // Inverness
Dundee & Perth
Featuring a range of prominent speakers, the objective of these events is to equip leaders with the tools they need to further unlock the potential of digital in their cities.
Supporting communities of digital talent in Scotland's major cities has been given added impetus following the recent publication of the Scottish Government's A Digital Strategy for Scotland.
Importantly, Digital Cities 2017 will provide useful local feedback following a nationwide health check on Scotland's digital cities carried out by Nesta - the innovation foundation.
The event's Digital Showcase also exposes local government and public sector agencies to solutions providers from industry - another strategic goal backed by government.
Our expert-led, intensive sessions, will be heavily focused on outcomes with a full and frank discussion about the strengths of Scotland's cities, and where added focus is needed on the path to digitalisation.
Key learnings from each event will be captured in the form of live audience polling and featured in a full report both on FutureScot.com and in The Times Scotland.
Thanks to our supporters, delegate rates are only £49 and as such places are very limited. So don't miss out - book now to secure your place.

Monday Maker Meetups are our open nights when anyone is able to pop in and see what's going on at Dundee MakerSpace.
If you just want to have a quick blast on a piece of equipment then this is when to do it.
Don't have a project you're working on? Join in with someone else or there's plenty of materials around for you to start something new!
There's plenty of making happening, got something you want to ask a question about or something to show off, bring it along.
Note: For those of you looking for our new location we are at the address below. To find us you head in the main door and into the main area then we are at the end of the first corridor on the right.
The Global Game Jam is held yearly and is the world's largest game jam event taking place around the world at physical locations. Think of it as a hackathon focused on game development. It is all condensed into a 48 hour development cycle. The GGJ encourages people with all kinds of backgrounds to participate and contribute to this global spread of game development and creativity.
Here’s the global game jam site:
http://globalgamejam.org/2017/jam-sites/dundee-makerspace
Please don’t sign up for multiple sites for the global game jam as this causes confusion for numbers of places.
You will need to be resisted there to submit your game/ add useful to team pages for submission so might as well do it before the jam but can be done later.
Opening hours:
Please don’t sign up for multiple sites for the global game jam as this causes confusion for numbers of places.
I don’t plan on having the space open though the night, instead 8am - 12 pm
Although if enough people request full 48 hour access it could be arranged.
It would be nice to have a mini play party at the end of the jam but that will depend on who is still awake and will happen if enough people request it.
Food:
We are currently seeking funding for food but have secured none at the moment but the location in central and there are loads of places to stalk up on snacks and get food, along with our small tuckshop which usually has some snack bars, crisps, tea, coffee, noodles cupa soup, and soft drinks.
You can bring your own food and drink into the space as long as you use the bins or take rubbish away with you.
If you or your company would like to sponsor the jam or part sponsor the jam please contact me and we could arrange some signage and mentions throughout the event : lowtek@hotmail.co.uk
Equipment:
There are a few computers in the makerspace but this is mainly a bring your own kit event. Some spare monitors are available for those who like dual screens.
We have a couple workshop benches which may be good for people who want to try a standing desk.
We may also be short on tables if a lot of people show hence the 70 person capacity but if anyone can bring their own table fold up or otherwise that would be much appreciated and if you email me ahead of time I could add more tickets as we have a lot of space just not enough tables. These tables should be removed at the end of the event.
We also home 3d printers, A3 2d printers, a laser cutter, vinyl cutter, soldering equipment and a variety of woodworking equipment if you wish to make something physical. Items such as the laser cutter and 3D printers which require materials have a small fee applied but the prices are reasonable.

This is a monthly raspberry pi meet up for all ages. It doesn't matter if you are a beginner or a pi guru. Come along to work on or show off your cool projects or why not collaborate on some new ones.
