Chris Taylor presents Introduction to Containers

Glasgow SQL User Group is delighted to have Chris Taylor (@SqlGeordie) come and give us an Introduction to Containers.

Containers have been around for a while now but are becoming increasingly popular and with Microsoft’s release of Windows Server 2016, Docker is now their effective container standard. In this demo-heavy session, we will run through what containers are, how to get started with Docker and “spinning up” SQL Server environments with minimal fuss and how you can adapt these or indeed your own VM images to create your own bespoke SQL Server development and testing environments.

Chris is a Principal Consultant working at Jarrin Consultancy providing SQL Server and Microsoft Azure consultancy to clients worldwide in a variety of industries ranging from Financial to Healthcare. He has been working with SQL Server since 2001 and during that time has become extremely strong in all areas of SQL Server but specialises in Security, System Optimisation and SQL Server Internals.

Using a gateway to leverage on-premises data in Power BI with Adam Saxton

In this session, we will look at how the On-Premises Data Gateway works, and how to deploy a gateway in your environment. We also look at the latest features of the gateway including high availability and Kerberos SSO with DirectQuery. Throw in some common issues that customers have and a look at some ways you can troubleshoot the gateway.

Adam Saxton is just a guy in a cube doing the work! He is on the Power BI CAT team at Microsoft working with customers to help adopt Power BI. He is based in Texas, and started with Microsoft supporting SQL Server connectivity and Reporting Services in 2005. Adam has worked with Power BI since the beginning, on the support side and with documentation. In addition, he produces weekly videos for his Guy in a Cube YouTube channel.

Stored Procedure Optimization Techniques - Kimberly L. Tripp of SQL Skills

Kimberly will discuss stored procedure caching and the potential for performance problems due to a problem known as parameter sniffing. There are some common solutions and while they can drastically improve performance, they can also cause other problems. Sometimes a hybrid solution is needs, from this session, you’ll know the best way to write procedures so that stable requests are cached and unstable requests are not (giving you the most optimal performance without wasting resources).
