In today's WordPress world we subcontract the management of our data to multiple organisations which in turn hold our data in multiple locations. This means our data is exposed to an event which impacts any one of those organisations and/or locations. We owe it to our users, whose details we keep in trust, to mitigate the impact of any such event. This talk discusses how we can do that and asks the question.... Are you ready for the Zombie Apocalypse?
* About the speaker:

** About the talk:
WordPress is easy to set up isn’t it? Isn’t it?!
This is a run-through of some of the basic tasks required in setting up a WP site including:
• initial installation;
• choosing a theme;
• selecting plugins;
• (very) basic SEO.
There’s lots to cover so it will be a skim through.Plus time for Q&A but hopefully minimal BS!
** About the Speaker:
Jeremy has spent over 30 years in IT and hasn’t been found out yet. He is well versed in a number of defunct programming languages and now designs and manages a variety of websites for both commercial and voluntary organisations.
His WP skills are self-taught and he has the bruises to prove it.
When he’s not working he can be found singing in musical theatre or playing tennis — but not at the same time.

WordPress Glasgow Workshop - Create your Own Child Theme by Carme Mias.
Description changed:
HANDS-ON WORKSHOP AT INTERMEDIATE LEVEL.
Come at 6:00pm if you need a hand setting up the local development platform.
Workshop starts at 6:30pm.
About the workshop:
Have you found a nearly perfect theme for your website but Customizer doesn't let you change everything you'd like to?
Do you build WordPress websites for other people and wish you could use your creativity a bit more?
Child Themes are great for those who want to take WordPress that bit further as they allow you to take an already existing WordPress Theme and change absolutely anything from it.
Why reinvent the wheel by coding a theme from scratch every time, right?
We will start by learning about the structure of a WordPress theme and then create our own Child Theme step by step.
We’ll also learn how to test our site for the various platforms and make sure it is responsive and accessible.
You will need:
Bring your laptop if you can but don't worry if you don't have one, we'll pair you up with somebody who has.
It'd also help if you already had a text editor and a local development environment set up on your laptop with WordPress already installed on it.
You can find information on how to install a local development environment at https://developer.wordpress.org/themes/getting-started/setting-up-a-development-environment/
For free text editors see http://www.techradar.com/news/the-best-free-text-editor-2017
Basic knowledge of PHP, HTML and CSS will help but it is not essential as we will cover everything from scratch.
If you already know how to build Child Themes, come along anyway and volunteer to help your co-members if they get stuck. It may be you next time!
We loved last September's Project Showcase so much we are having another one!
So, come along and ...
****** SHARE YOUR WORDPRESS PROJECT WITH US ******
It could be the blog or website you are currently working on, the project you are most proud of or even something you can't work out and have been scratching your head about (we've all been there!).
Whatever it is, come along and share it with us. There’s an incredible buzz that comes from shared learning and collaboration. Let's make it happen!
Oh, and if you don't have a project to share, come along too!
Please note that attendees should preferably bring their own laptop or tablet as the venue has free wifi but no projector or TV facilities. Thank you.
We'll be posting more information about each particular event as time goes by...
WordPress Glasgow TALK - “Night of the Living Style Guides”, by Sarah Semark
Description changed:
Meetup starts at 6:00pm to give everyone a chance to get a cuppa, have a chat and meet other local WordPressers.
Talk starts at 6:30pm
ABOUT THE TALK:
The line between design and development is getting blurrier, and our approach to web design is becoming more modular. How do we keep track of it all?
Style guides to the rescue!
Using style guides that update as our projects progress, we can visually document our work and ensure that everything stays consistent. They may seem daunting and time-consuming at first, but they don’t have to be.
How do I get started with living style guides? What’s a living style guide anyway, and how do I know if mine is dead? Isn’t that going to slow me down? Why should I bother?
Let’s find out.
* ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Sarah is a self-defined globetrotter who has recently moved to Edinburgh. She used to run a freelance design business and is currently working for Automattic, making themes for WordPress.com.
