What it takes to build a website. Focus: web designer's role.

Traditionally, the 3 roles involved in getting a website up and running have been very separate and well-defined. There is the website owner, the web designer and the backend developer. And although normally there is enough communication between them to get the job done, sometimes there is also a fair bit of misunderstanding.

This event will be the first of a series of three, where we will focus on each of the roles in turn, starting with that of web designer and frontend developer.

We are currently working to bring you a couple of lightning talks plus a roundtable discussion covering points such as:

• What makes a good theme or template?
• What would you add to the list of must-have best practices of web design?
• Custom vs template.
• Frameworks vs. child theme.
• Which criteria do you use to decide when to use either?
• From the web design point of view, is the customer always right?

If you are a frontend developer, come along to share your thought processes and compare them with others.

Sarah is a self-defined globetrotter who has recently moved to Edinburgh. She used to run a freelance design business and is currently working for Automattic, making themes for WordPress.com.

About the talk -

This will be a revised, slightly more technical version of a talk Sarah gave in this year's Wordcamp London.

Icon fonts are no longer exciting new tools, yet most of us are still relying on them. In this talk, Sarah will discuss the various merits of making the switch to SVG and some neat things you can do with it. She will provide some practical tips and tools, discuss ideas for implementing SVG within WordPress themes or plugins and examine various challenges you may encounter, and how to approach them.

Please note that all attendees should bring their own laptop or tablet as the venue has free wifi but no projector or TV facilities. Thank you.

We have plenty of ideas about all the fab stuff we could do at our new Glasgow Wordpress meetup... But we would also love to hear what you would like it to be about.
Everyone's welcome regardless of experience. We'll always do our best to hold our events at accessible venues and maintain entry free of charge.

Wordpress Glasgow meets every 4th Tuesday of the month in the city centre. Everyone is welcome: designers, developers and users of WordPress, with all levels of experience.

We're a group of local WordPress developers, designers, and publishers who get together to share our knowledge and experience, and to meet other WordPress users in the area. Everyone's welcome regardless of experience.

Hands-on workshops, speakers, show-and-tells... A lot is happening at our meets but we are also open to new ideas and suggestions. What would you like to do? Let us know and let's make it happen!
