Our April meetup will be held jointly with EdinbR (https://www.meetup.com/EdinbR) and we will be joined by one of our organisers, Dr. Mine Çetinkaya-Rundel.
That’s what Nicola said:
A tidy case study of Nicola Sturgeon’s COVID-19 briefings
If you've also spent the last year watching the COVID-19 briefings almost daily, you might have also been thinking "I wonder what an analysis of this data would reveal". In this talk, Mine will walk you through a case study of Nicola Sturgeon's COVID-19 briefings, involving web scraping, text analysis, and modeling using tools from the tidyverse, tidytext, and tidymodels.
Password for the Zoom session will be sent out on the day of the event.

R-Ladies is a worldwide organization whose mission is to promote gender diversity in the R community.
A question we often get is "Are men welcome to attend this event?"
As a diversity initiative, the mission of R-Ladies is to achieve proportionate representation by encouraging, inspiring, and empowering people of genders currently underrepresented in the R community. R-Ladies’ primary focus, therefore, is on supporting minority gender R enthusiasts to achieve their programming potential, by building a collaborative global network of R leaders, mentors, learners, and developers to facilitate individual and collective progress worldwide.
**As such, we strongly encourage cis-men who attend this event to come as guests of R-Ladies who are minority genders (including but not limited to cis/trans women, trans men, non-binary, genderqueer, agender).**
All attendees are strongly encouraged to review the R-Ladies Code of Conduct (https://rladies.org/code-of-conduct) and must abide by it.
In our May 2021 meetup we're joined by Athanasia Monika Mowinckel. Athanasia is a researcher at the Center for Lifespan Changes in Brain and Cognition, organiser for R-Ladies Oslo, and is a member of the R-Ladies Global team.
Zhoosh up your ggplots!
In this talk Athanasia will share with us her tips and tricks for enhancing (zhooshing up!) your data visualisations made with ggplot2.

Always look on the bright side of plots w/ Kara Woo & rstudio::global(2021)
Description changed:
For this virtual meetup, we're collaborating with the folks at RStudio and hosting Kara Woo (Principal Bioinformatics Engineer at Sage Bionetworks). We'll start off with a brief introduction to rstudio::global(2021) and then watch Kara's rstudio::global talk "Always look on the bright side of plots" followed by a live Q&A with Kara! Zoom password will be sent out the day of the event.
Always look on the bright side of plots
Everyone who creates visualizations in R is bound to make mistakes that prevent their plots from looking as they should. Sometimes, these mistakes create beautiful "accidental aRt", though other times they're just plain frustrating. Either way, however, there's something to be learned. This talk will draw on years of watching both the ggplot2 issue tracker and the @accidental__aRt Twitter account to highlight some common plot foibles and explain what they can teach us about how ggplot2 works.
rstudio::global is a free, virtual event on all things R & RStudio.
It's hosted over 24-hours – giving people at different timezones a number of options to conveniently engage – with a number of talks and community-engagement events we hope you'll enjoy. It starts on January 21 at 4:00 PM GMT. Learn more about rstudio::global and register at https://global.rstudio.com.

This is a second event in our Tidy Tuesday series: a dedicated time and supportive virtual space for us all to do some coding. We will use that week's Tidy Tuesday dataset to do data exploration, visualisation and analysis. Every participant will be free to take whatever direction they like and the coding will be done largely independently. But fear not, we will help each other when we get stuck and we will share our creations at the end of the event.
This event is meant for R-Ladies with any level of coding skills: whether you're a beginner or an experienced coder, you'll definitely get an opportunity to practice your skills and learn something new.
To participate, you need a computer with an installation of R and internet access. The workshop will be happening on Zoom - all attendees will be sent the access password in advance of the event. You can install Zoom on your computer for free if you like, but you can also use it via your internet browser.
Here is a very rough agenda:
5:30pm Welcome and introductions
5:45pm Get coding
6:30pm Quick check-in
7:15pm Sharing our findings and creations
7:30pm Closing of the event

Modeling and machine learning in R involve a bewildering array of heterogeneous packages, and establishing good statistical practice is challenging in any language. The tidymodels (tidymodels.org) collection of packages offers a consistent, flexible framework for your modeling and machine learning work to address these problems. In this talk, we’ll focus on three specific reasons to consider using tidymodels. We will start with model characteristics themselves, move to the wise management of your data budget, and finish with feature engineering.
Julia Silge is a data scientist and software engineer at RStudio PBC where she works on open source modeling tools. She is an author, an international keynote speaker, and a real-world practitioner focusing on data analysis and machine learning practice. Julia loves text analysis, making beautiful charts, and communicating about technical topics with diverse audiences.

[ONLINE] Scalable Automatic Machine Learning in R with H2O with Erin LeDell
Description changed:
**UPDATE** We are moving this event online, at the same time and day. We will send a Zoom link for the call day prior to the event. Hope you can join us online!
Dr. Erin LeDell is the Chief Machine Learning Scientist at H2O.ai, where she leads the development of an open-source, automatic machine learning (AutoML) platform. Before joining H2O.ai, she worked as a data scientist and software engineer and founded DataScientific, Inc. She’s also the founder of the non-profit Women in Machine Learning & Data Science (WiMLDS.org) organization and co-founder of the R-Ladies Global organization. She received her Ph.D. from UC Berkeley where her research focused on machine learning and statistical computing.
**Scalable Automatic Machine Learning in R with H2O**
The focus of this presentation is scalable and automatic machine learning in R using the H2O machine learning platform. H2O is an open-source, distributed machine learning platform is designed to scale to very large datasets that may not fit into RAM on a single machine. We will provide a brief overview of the field of Automatic Machine Learning, followed by a detailed look inside H2O’s AutoML algorithm. H2O AutoML provides an easy-to-use interface that automates data pre-processing, training and tuning a large selection of candidate models (including multiple stacked ensemble models for superior model performance), and due to the distributed nature of the H2O platform, H2O AutoML can scale to very large datasets. The result of the AutoML run is a “leaderboard” of H2O models which can be easily exported for use in production. R code examples are available on GitHub for participants to follow along on their laptops.

Q: Are men welcome to attend this event?
A: Our primary mission is to encourage more women and non-binary individuals to get involved in the R community. ***As such, we strongly encourage that all men who attend this event have a female or non-binary sponsor. Please contact mine@rladies.org if you have questions.***
Additionally, please help us by spreading the word about R-Ladies, and by being respectful of the fact that this event is primarily for women/non-binary/female-identifying individuals.
Understand word embeddings using tidy data principles with Julia Silge
Description changed:
For our April meetup we're so very lucky to have Julia Silge join us! Julia is a data scientist and software engineer at RStudio where she works on open-source modeling tools. She is also the co-author of Tidy Text Mining with R (tidytextmining.com). Julia is keynoting at satRdays Newcastle on April 4, and passing through Edinburgh on her way there. We recommend checking out newcastle2020.satrdays.org for a great, nearby R event as well!
**Understand word embeddings using tidy data principles**
Modern NLP frameworks often depend on word embeddings, a way of statistically modeling language where words or phrases are mapped to vectors of real numbers. In this talk, we’ll work to understand word embeddings by investigating how we can generate them using count-based statistics and dimensionality reduction, then learn how to make use of pre-trained embeddings based on enormous datasets. Finally, we’ll explore the ethical issues involved in using word embeddings and how they can amplify systemic and historical bias.
