Secure Against What? A Threat Modelling Masterclass
Description changed:
During this masterclass we will be joined by Richard King, Business Analyst at BJSS. Richard has never had much respect for warranties. As a child, his parents banned him from going within arm's length of any new household electronics, in case he tried to take them apart to find out how they worked. Later he became interested not only in how things work but also how they fail. He's worked on various security products, including DDoS protection, encrypted multi-party chat, secure file-sharing, and accidental data-breach prevention.
Richard is currently a business analyst, squad lead, and security evangelist at BJSS Sheffield.
Threat modelling is an analysis method that helps you identify vulnerabilities so that you can mitigate them.
It's a proactive way to review and improve your security.
Join us to work through a practical threat-modelling method that will:
- Minimise vulnerabilities
- Avoid waste
- Communicate the security properties of your system
- Explain which security measures are necessary or valuable, and why

On Wednesday 19th October, we will be discussing Data Protection!
In cyber security, we focus heavily on the technical aspects of security. But what is it all for? The answer is, the protection of data.
Although data protection is often perceived as a boring topic, yet it is the very reason our profession exists.
In our session this month, we will discuss establishing and maintaining a data inventory and data classification scheme. We will discuss the technical and organisational measures you should put in place to protect data, including encryption and Data Loss Prevention (DLP) technologies.
Join us on Wednesday 28th September to discuss Application Software Security!
How do we prevent Bugs from eating your business?!
Every system has flaws, and some of these can lead to our systems and services failing!
From hosted and acquired to in-house developed systems, are we confident in how to build security features that prevent security vulnerabilities from being exploited?
Because the faster and earlier you can detect and resolve security concerns in the software development process, the safer your company will be so our in-person event in September will focus on this important and often neglected area of Security and development.
We will discuss “Security by design” and “Privacy by design” and other important secure design principles.
We’ll look at simple measures you can take to ensure cracks in the system, don’t let the bugs in!
Application security is the process of developing, adding, and testing security features within applications to prevent security vulnerabilities against threats such as unauthorized access and modification.
Application Software Security - How do you manage the security life cycle of in-house developed, hosted, or acquired software to prevent, detect, and remediate security weaknesses before they can impact the enterprise?
Join us on Wednesday 28th September at the Digital Media Centre in Barnsley to discuss Application Software Security!

Webinar - Email and Web Browser Protections, Malware Defences
Description changed:
On Wednesday 20th July, we will be discussing Email and Web Browser Protections, Malware Defences.
Love it or hate it, Email is still the number one method of business communication, and still the number one method used by Scammers and Cybercriminals to gain access to your business (and your life!). Email and web browsers are the windows into the Cyber universe, but if we leave them unchecked – who is climbing in through those windows?
As one Hacker told us “Once I have access to your inbox, I own you!”.
So in our next YCSC in July, we want to explore what we can do to better protect ourselves when using email or web browsers.
We’ll discuss…
What is DMARC? And how can it help protect your business.
What Filters are necessary – Different types, why they are important and why you need to talk to your board about them.
What forms of Email and malware protection you need.
Importantly we will also cover malware defences – what they are, what you need and why you can’t afford to ignore them.
We have amazing members at the Cluster so we want you to come to the event with your best advice and ideas.
Come share, learn and contribute. We look forward to seeing you there.
We will be discussing Service Provider Management.
As the saying goes, “We are only as strong as our weakest link”. So how strong is the supply chain that we use in our own organisations?
In our May session, we will take a look at supplier management and discuss the risks we need to manage and how these should be managed. With the help of the YCSC community we will discuss:
- How we classify service providers.
- How we onboard new suppliers.
- What security controls are you expecting to see?
- Your legal obligations associated with controllers and processors.
- How regularly you should audit your suppliers, and what are you auditing against?
The risks surrounding third party providers is said to be on the increase and with ISO27002:2022 specifically focusing a control on Cloud Security, this is a topic of increasing importance.
Join us for Yorkshire Cyber Security Cluster's first virtual Masterclass! We will be holding these sessions on a monthly basis.

- What solutions are there?
- What tools & techniques can we deploy to address these important issues?
