Virtual CodeUp Sheffield - July 2020 - On Slack - Featuring SQL!
Description changed:
CodeUp Sheffield is a mentoring program for adults who would like to learn how to code for free. Once a month we get together to learn from each other, sharpen our skills and enjoy being in a space where everyone is immersed in code!
This month, CodeUp will be held in our Slack workspace again. If you haven't already joined our workspace, you can do so here:
https://codeupshf-slack.herokuapp.com/
When the event starts, we will gather in a new channel in the workspace called #2020-july, and share things, ask questions and chat about code, branching off into threads and other channels as necessary. In the time leading up to the event, updates will be posted in the channel, so please join the channel at your earliest convenience.
Please RSVP so that we know how many people will be joining us.
This month, as well as the usual discussion about coding in our Slack workspace, we will be holding a video-call meeting with a focus on SQL. If you are interested in taking part in this, please read the information below:
What is SQL?
SQL (Structured Query Language) is a language designed to allow users to query, manipulate, and transform data from a relational database. SQL has become synonymous with relational database management to such an extent that all non-relational database management systems are commonly grouped together under the title "NoSQL". As a result, almost all backend or full-stack developers will encounter SQL at some point.
How will the session work?
The session will use SQLBolt (https://sqlbolt.com/), "a series of interactive lessons and exercises designed to help you quickly learn SQL right in your browser". Before the session, please start working through the lessons. If you are already confident with some aspects of SQL, you don't have to start at the beginning. Feel free to start at a lesson that covers something that you are not entirely confident with. When you run out of time or get stuck, stop there. At the beginning of the session, we will discuss where everyone got to, and use the session to collaboratively address questions and overcome sticking points.

There are many resources out there that help you to teach yourself to code, but sometimes there is no substitute for the insight and guidance that another person can give. Our group consists of coders with a wide range of experience, and our aim is to facilitate mentoring between more experienced and less experienced coders.
All you have to bring is a laptop and some coding to get on with, such as a project, a book, or some online tutorials. If you are starting completely from scratch, we will try to guide you towards some learning resources. Please try to install any relevant software in advance, but if you need assistance with this, we are happy to help.
This month will have the standard format - just turn up and do whatever interests you most.
Please RSVP as soon as possible. If you have RSVPed and are subsequently unable to come, please change your RSVP so that someone else can have your place.
If you can't wait until the event to start sharing interesting coding stuff and learning from each other, you can join our Slack workspace at the below link! (If you like, you can introduce yourself in the -intros channel.)

Our website is now live: https://codeupshf.github.io/
And we also have a GitHub organisation: https://github.com/CodeUpSHF
We will be using it to host source code for workshops and collaborative documents for the group. In particular, please take a look at our proposed Code of Conduct (https://github.com/CodeUpSHF/code-of-conduct), which is currently open for discussion (see the repository for details). Please also see our policies document (https://github.com/CodeUpSHF/policies-and-protocols), which has a pull request open with the first few proposed policies (https://github.com/CodeUpSHF/policies-and-protocols/pull/1).
The purpose of this approach is to give everyone the opportunity to have a voice in how the group is run. If you cannot participate in the discussion on GitHub or wish to comment anonymously, please write to the organiser on Meetup or Slack.
Many thanks to Sheffield Technology Parks for providing the venue. Please leave them a review on Google Maps!

*More good news!*
CodeUp Sheffield will soon have its own website!
*The best news!*
You're going to make it! The next CodeUp Sheffield event will be a workshop on how to make a webpage and host it using GitHub Pages. This workshop will be suitable for people who have never made a website before, and does not require previous coding experience.
You will need to install the following software on your laptop:
- A general purpose IDE (e.g. VS Code, Atom) or text editor (e.g. Vim, Emacs, Notepad++)
- A modern web browser (e.g. Chrome, Firefox, Edge)
- Git (https://git-scm.com)
You will also need a GitHub account.
If you have difficulty with any of the above, please arrive fifteen minutes early, and we will try to help you get set up.
If you do not wish to participate in the workshop, the co-working space outside the meeting room will be used to offer the usual CodeUp format of learning to code through individual study, mentoring and collaborative work. Please note that there may be less assistance than usual, as some mentors will be assisting with the workshop.
Please RSVP as soon as possible and give your full name to help reception to check you in. If you are no longer able to attend please change your RSVP so that someone else can have your place.

One last thing...
We currently use CodeUp UK's code of conduct. If you view our GitHub organisation, you will see that there is a repository containing a proposed new Code of Conduct, which is based on Sheffield Digital's one. It will be open for discussion through GitHub issues for two months, after which the code will be officially adopted.
Summer is here, and for some people, that means going away and spending time doing things that are even more fun than coding (hard to believe, we know!). The result is that attendance in July and August is usually lower than average. Please be understanding if there are no mentors/experts in your area of interest present this time around.
However many people attend, we hope it will be a fun and useful time for all!

CodeUp Sheffield is back at our new venue: Sheffield Technology Parks!
CodeUp Sheffield is a mentoring program for adults who would like to learn how to code for free. Once a month we get together to learn from each other, sharpen our skills and enjoy being in a space where everyone is immersed in code!
For this month's CodeUp, we will be having an introduction to GitHub workshop, delivered by the Developer Academy. GitHub is a web-based hosting service that utilises the version control software Git. It is the largest host of source code in the world, and it is one of the most important technologies for any aspiring developer to become familiar with. The Developer Academy have kindly offered to run a training session on the basics of Git/GitHub, and will also be telling us a bit about who they are and what they do. This will be an interactive lesson, not just a talk, so please bring your laptop and enthusiasm!
The workshop will start at 18:00. To ensure the workshop starts on time, please install Git on your laptop and make a GitHub account before the event. If you would like assistance with this, please arrive between 17:30 and 17:45, and we will help you get set up.
From our point of view, this is a great opportunity, however, just because something is free it doesn't mean that it’s right for you at this moment in time. There is no requisite level of coding ability to learn Git and GitHub - in fact, you can use these tools to version control and collaborate on non-coding projects, such as a poem or article. However, you may simply not need version control, or Git's solution to the problem of version control may not be to your taste. If you are uncertain whether this workshop is for you, we recommend reading the following article up to "Basic Git" (there's no need to read further as basic Git commands will be covered in the workshop). If you can begin to understand the basic ideas (don't worry about the jargon) and it sounds interesting to you, we hope to see you at the workshop!
If you would like to attend this month's CodeUp but you do not wish to take part in the workshop, please RSVP as you usually would. We will be using the shared working space outside of the meeting room to offer the usual CodeUp format. However, please note that the mentors will need to prioritise helping with the workshop, so you may not have as much support as you usually would or, worst case scenario, no support at all, so we recommend you come prepared to work on your own (we never know beforehand how many mentors will attend the Meetup!). We intend for normal Meetups to resume next month.
We expect this to be a very popular CodeUp and, as always, places are limited, so if you want to attend, please RSVP as soon as possible. If you are subsequently unable to come, please change your RSVP so that someone else can have your place. Thanks!

CodeUp Sheffield is a mentoring program for adults who would like to learn how to code for free. Once a month we intend to provide a workspace for people with no programming skills to come and learn the basics, with mentors available to answer your questions and help you on your way. Our sessions will also be suitable for people with basic skills who need support to develop them, and even for people with intermediate or advanced skills who just want to come along to a space where everyone is immersed in code!
Come along and talk to our mentors - they can help if you need some pointers to get started with programming, some advice on a project you're working on, or if you have any other questions about coding or getting your first job in the tech industry.
Please ensure you bring along your own laptop with all the software you need already installed.

Doors open at 6pm for you to come and mingle, talk to people who share your interests in coding, and sort out who's doing what.
At 6:30 we'll split into groups by language/project, either with mentors or others who are interested in the same thing, for group learning.
The Workstation is fully accessible with lift access to all floors. We are quite restricted on space, so we cannot let you in if you have not RSVPed. If you have signed up but can't make it anymore, please set your RSVP to no so that other people can take your place.
Please ensure you bring along your own laptop.

On top of our usual proceedings, we will have an intro to the Ruby language this month and we’ll invite some Shruggers to be on hand on the day for our students. If you are a developer from another language, or a beginner who would want to learn (more) Ruby, this is the place for you. I’m reliably informed that our mentors also do other languages, so can help on the day with your work.
