As a follow up from our last event where we heard from a digital marketing industry insider about how advertisers exploit personal data, we'll continue on the same theme to hear all about Open Rights Group's ongoing General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) complaints to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) about the real time bidding systems used by Google Ads and the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB).
We'll also hear about highlights from ORGCon 2019 and get updates about ORG's ongoing campaigns.
Learn to protect yourself from companies tracking you on the Internet.
Description changed:
Are you unhappy with the way companies track you online? Want to learn easy tips for a better, safer Internet experience?
Then join us Wednesday 19 June in Oxford to hear insider knowledge from a digital marketing expert and learn how to "opt out" of the corporate surveillance economy.
We’ll also hear from Open Rights Group about their work protecting the digital rights of UK residents.
All are welcome to this free event. All you need is a desire to protect your rights online.
We recommend bringing digital devices like laptops and mobile phones so you can use what you learn immediately.
Social media regulation vs. digital free expression
Description changed:
Concerned about Government proposals to regulate social media platforms (and social media users)? Curious about the current state of digital censorship in the UK?
Then join us in Oxford for an evening with Open Rights Group executive director Jim Killock as he reviews new Government plans to address “online harms” from bullying to terrorism, and how it could impact your right to free expression online.
We’ll also discuss how you can make your voice heard by responding to the Government’s public consultation.
This is a free event and no experience is necessary. All are welcome!
Open Rights Group (ORG) exists to protect your rights in the digital world. We challenge the Government’s mass surveillance programme and stand up to Big Tech’s moves to control your personal data. With over 3,000 supporters across the UK, ORG has local activist groups in cities and towns across the UK.
Could new plans to make Britain "the safest place in the world to be online" have unintended consequences?
Hear from campaigns manager Mike Morel, legal officer Alex Haydock, and organiser Deepika Gudavalli about how the Government is pressuring social media companies to police speech online. Learn how heavy fines compel the roll out of not-so-smart filters that can silence free speech, and how murky definitions of 'harmful content' give social media companies unprecedented control over free expression.
No experience is necessary to attend this FREE event. All are welcome, please join us!
Join us at Oxford Hackspace for a night of lively discussion about protecting human rights in the digital age. We'll be joined by Campaigns Manager Mike Morel who will provide an overview of ORG's current and upcoming campaigns covering mass surveillance, digital privacy, data protection, free speech online, web blocking, automated censorship & more. But this meet up is also about YOU. We want to hear about the digital rights issues most important to you and what you'd like to see ORG do about them.
Absolutely no experience is necessary for this FREE event. All you need to bring is an interest in how technology affects society and personal freedom, and a desire to work for positive change.
Please try to arrive on time so as not to disrupt the meeting.
