TALK DESCRIPTION:

Have a look at the Agile Manifesto, the Scrum guide and the XP book, how little (if any) guidance can be found for those that constitute the major part of our organisations: the leaders.

It’s interesting how the fathers (and mothers) of our movement wanted to challenge the old ways of thinking but has very little to offer for the people that have to change the most.

Deming said “They must know what it is that they are committed to” but the question remains how they are supposed to discover it?
Time and time again I hear the slogan “management support” as if they are some incorporeal beings that will not be touched by the transformation to a new philosophy of work.

Whether we want to admit it or not we all benefit from great leadership and underperform faced with poor management, it’s our duty as Agile practitioners to help those that are suppose to help ourselves.

For years now I’ve been working primarily with leaders to help them develop a mindset that will unblock agility in their organisations. If there is one thing that I have learned is that they are faced with a most difficult challenge; not only face the expectation of them owning all the objectives the organisation want’s to achieve (even if they know that it’s not about them) but also the challenge of unlearning most of what got them to this point to embrace the new philosophy of work: agile.

BIO: Tomasz Kropiewnicki

I’m a passionate agile coach on a mission of discovery. I spend my days creating high-performance teams and helping organisations reach excellence in software delivery and portfolio management.
Recently I’ve been busy with helping a global retail bank leading the agile transformation in one of its units.

I took my first steps in iterative value delivery in 2006 with feature driven development. Although I quickly moved to scrum, I never looked back. I hold a deep belief that the purpose of a high performance agile team is to deliver value through sensing and responding: practices – whatever they might be – are there to help.
