There has been a lot of activity recently within the open source scene with the launch of GitHub Sponsors, offering a way to financially support open source code contributors. This is a great first step to help supporting individuals within the open source community. But is there somehow a way to encourage companies & agencies, those in particular that receive tremendous benefit from open source, to also sponsor or even acknowledge the huge effort made by not only individual contributors but the teams of people that maintain the open source project.
For our very first meet up we will be discussing the aspects of funding our open source projects, how the impact of funding could affect the community's dynamics and how it can make companies more aware of the effort involved. We will also discuss the challenges both companies & open source maintainers face in setting up a funding structure and how to overcome the stigma of sponsorship. This will take the format of a Guided Conversation.
Guided conversations are a friendly way to have a structured yet lightweight discussion around a topic. A guide will make sure we stay on track, and offer questions to spark the conversation. It doesn't matter if you're new to the industry, or whether you're experienced, you may be able to ask just the right questions to unlock key insights for others, whilst listening in and learning for yourself. We'll explain the format and make sure everyone can participate in the discussion.
This inaugural meetup will take place at Codebase, Edinburgh - many thanks to Codebase for giving us such a great venue !

The Scotland Open Source Users Meetups (OSUM) aim to bring people in Scotland together around Free and Open Source Software ("FOSS"), with a focus on helping discover projects; discuss the impact FOSS has on our industry; and explore ways to support and promote a healthy open source ecosystem.
These meetups will be a combination of talks & demonstrations about all aspects of open source and how it can be incorporated into your day to day activities. There will be topics and activities for all levels of immersion; including workshops and demos of OSS; discussions & announcements on what’s going on in the world of open source (new tech, changes in licenses ...); debates on open source principles and practices; and how to support and manage online communities & projects etc.
Scotland OSUM is also keen to help raise awareness of other meetups that have a focus on discussing and advocating for Open Source and Free Software. If you are organising one for your town, do get in touch, here on on Twitter via @ScotlandOSUM !
WIP: We are still getting set up with the events and venues, so if you have any interesting talks/topics or you know of fellow OS advocates that would want a platform to voice how much they love open source then feel free to contact us :D
