PyData Edinburgh EuroPython Special!

This is a special event in the group - because EuroPython is in town we thought why not invite some speakers from the conference to give talks at the meetup too!

Because of this, the format will be talks and lots of opportunities to discuss/network/chat over the topics with the speaker(s). We have Vincent Warmerdamfrom PyData Amsterdam giving a talk and Kat Jarmul from PyData Berlin.

TALK DETAILS
=============

Talk # 1:

TITLE: CSaaCaH: common sense as a cure against hype

PRESENTER: Vincent D Warmerdam

Vincent is from Amsterdam: Ask him Anything[tm]. Vincent is an algorithm designer at GoDataDriven who helps run the PyData conference in Amsterdam and he enjoys to evangelise open source tools and machine learning. He’s well known for his blunt honesty on stage, his pokemon antics on linkedin/reddit as well as his writing on his blog koaning.io.

DESCRIPTION:

People sometimes forget that we are merely interested in solving problems … and when you solve a problem: maybe common sense is all you need. You shouldn’t trust the algorithm to do everything for you; artificial stupidity might very well happen. In this talk I’ll discuss a few recent examples that are fed by hype, vanity metrics and other forms of intellectual laziness. The goal is to remind everyone that thinking is still a good idea. Topics include will recommenders, word embeddings, sampling algorithms and … a story about chickens that might make you think differently on modelling … by forcing you to think again.

Talk # 2:

TITLE: Navigating the Data Privacy Maze: A Map for Data Scientists

PRESENTER: Katharine Jarmul is a data scientist and co-founder of KIProtect, a data security and privacy company for data science workflows in Berlin, Germany. She's been using code since 2008 to solve and create problems. She helped form the first PyLadies chapter in Los Angeles in 2010, and co-authored an O'Reilly book along with several video courses on Python and data. She enjoys following the latest developments in machine learning, natural language processing, data privacy and ethics and workflow automation infrastructure and is generally chatty and crabby on Twitter, where you can keep up with her latest shenanigans (@kjam).

DESCRIPTION:

With regulations like GDPR, data breaches both from aggregate anonymized as well as simple API access mistakes and heightened user mistrust of technology companies, being a data scientist who wants to do the right thing with regard to data privacy is no easy task. In this talk, we'll explore the maze of today's data privacy problems and offer some pathways to ethically and thoughtfully navigate your work. We will explore methods such as homomorphic pseudonymization, differential privacy and homomorphic encryption.
