Open Rights Group Edinburgh: A Scottish National Identity Database By The Backdoor: and how to stop it!

Come along to discuss how we can stop the  Scottish Government's plans to create a national identity database.

A minor, barely noticed consultation is not the way to make a major change to Scottish citizens’ privacy and their relationship with the state. Creating a national ID register was rejected by the SNP at the UK, and the bare minimum should be for the Scottish Executive to introduce primary legislation whereby the public and MSPs can debate the nature of these changes and whether they are acceptable.

Speakers:

• Jim Killock, Executive Director, Open Rights Group

• Patrick Harvie MSP, Scottish Green Party

• John Welford, No2ID Edinburgh

They've been building the scheme for 9 years without any serious democratic debate. This is a major threat to privacy and the new database would bring Scotland into a system very like the scrapped and unpopular UK ID cards scheme—by the backdoor.

The Scottish Government is running a consultation on the scheme and we want to tell them that they should put a stop to their plans.

Arrive from 5.30 pm and the meeting will start at 6.15pm.

This event is open to everyone. You do not have to be an ORG member to attend.
