This month we are delighted to welcome Kevin Richardson - seasoned UX professional, Doctor of Psychology and motorbike enthusiast! Kevin joins from all the way across the pond, and will talk about the need for UX Designers to move beyond ease of use, and turn our attention towards helping people understand the technology they use.

Designing for Understanding
The exponential growth of digital technology has resulted in products and services that far surpass our human cognitive capabilities. Industry has historically attempted to bridge this gap by forcing people to adapt to the needs of the technology. Modern UX addresses this issue by hiding complexity behind simple, easy-to-use interfaces. While our approach has improved usability and usefulness, it has had the unintended consequence of making it more difficult for people to understand their technology. I argue that this needs to be the defining issue of our profession right now. It’s time for UX to take a broader view of our responsibilities and move beyond simply helping people use their technology. It’s time to start helping them understand it.

About Kevin
Kevin is an award winning user experience professional with almost 30 years of consulting and in-house experience, focused on enterprise software and custom business applications. With a PhD in Cognitive Psychology, he has researched, evaluated, designed, mentored, and managed teams as they create innovative, user-centered solutions. Outside of work, Kevin tempts fate, risks long-term disability, and tests his wife’s patience by racing motorcycles.
