After the film, we’ll show you how to submit a subject access request (SAR) to UK political parties so you can find out exactly what personal data they are holding on you.
To complete a (SAR), you’ll need to bring a laptop or phone and a photo ID that proves your identity and lists your current voting address. A driving licence will suffice if the address is your current voting address. If the address is outdated, you'll need to add a second document with your current voting address. This could be a utility bill, council tax bill or a bank statement from the last 3 months.

Through our internet connection records, a detailed picture of our lives can now be requested by up to 48 public bodies, including even the Food Standards Agency, through a process of self-authorisation.
This meta data can reveal many things - when we are awake, where we are, who we know, our sexuality, religion, political leanings, causes we support, mental and physical health concerns, addictions, who we bank with, the list goes on...
The erosion of our privacy will create a chilling effect that will lead to self-censorship and stifle free expression at the expense of our democracy.
All of this information will be stored by your ISP or mobile provider, making them a prime target for hackers. Remember the recent TalkTalk hack?
In addition, the power to force communication service providers to insert backdoors into their products and services undermines online security for everyone.
So what can you do?
Come along to our privacy workshop and learn how to protect yourself from mass surveillance and online crime.
This workshop is aimed at beginners, no prior knowledge or advanced technical skills are required.
Just bring along yourself and the device(s) you would like to protect, i.e. smartphone and laptop, as you will have the option to follow along with the tutorials.
Bringing a device isn't strictly necessary however, if you would prefer to just take notes.
The workshop will include the following;
- Why digital rights and privacy matter and what the recent General Election results mean for these.
- How to assess your threat model.
- How to install and use tools such as Signal, VPN and secure email.
- How to manage your passwords, encryption keys and use two-factor authentication.
- How to secure your browsing environment.
- How to recognise and avoid common attacks like phishing and malware.
By the end of the workshop you will possess the basic knowledge and skills to keep yourself safe online.
Most importantly you will be able to pass this knowledge on, helping to protect your family and friends too.

14 years in prison for doing journalism?! An in-depth look at the Espionage Act

Join us on Wednesday 12th April to find out from Jim Killock, Executive Director of the Open Rights Group, about what the new law means for journalists and whistleblowers and what you can do to stop the Law Commission's proposals.
About the Espionage Act
The Law Commission is advising the Government how to update the law about classified state secrets - they want a new Espionage Act to increase the penalties, and allow journalists handling secret documents to be treated like spies.
Their proposals would stop investigative journalism and public-interest whistleblowing concerning the secret state.
Would you risk 14 years in jail just for examining secret documents?
Whistleblowers and journalists wouldn't be able to use a public interest defence to protect themselves if they were prosecuted under the proposed Espionage Act. Instead, government staff would have to raise concerns internally. Journalists would have to turn down requests to investigate and report - or risk jail.
Journalists and whistleblowers wouldn't have to give the documents to foreign powers, cause harm or even publish the documents to be jailed for 14 years.

About the speaker:
Since joining Open Rights Group in January 2009, Jim has led numerous campaigns on digital rights issues, most recently against the Investigatory Powers Act (Snoopers Charter) and the Digital Economy Bill.
He was named as one of the 50 most influential people on IP issues by Managing IP in 2012. In the same year ORG won Liberty's Human Rights Campaigner of Year award alongside 38 Degrees, for work on issues from copyright to the Snooper’s Charter.
Before joining ORG, Jim worked as External Communications Co-ordinator of the Green Party. At the Green Party, he promoted campaigns on open source, intellectual property and digital rights. He was also a leading figure in the campaign to elect their first party leader, Caroline Lucas MP.

We formed in response to the continued erosion of our rights to privacy and freedom of expression, through legislation such as the Investigatory Powers Act and the proposed Digital Economy Bill.
To get things started we will be discussing the current state of digital rights, the challenges ahead and what we can do as a group to make a difference. We would love to hear about your ideas, so please come along with plenty if you can!
To set the scene beforehand we will be showing the excellent short documentary 'The Haystack' by Scenes of Reason, a real life investigation into 21st century surveillance in the UK.
Ed Johnson-Williams, ORG's Campaigner, will be at the event to help provide an overview of some of the free tools that you can use to protect your privacy. This will be a taster for the privacy workshops that we intend to run in the near future.

The event will be in the upstairs function room, we will ask if we can put up signs, but please ask at the bar if you need pointing in the right direction.
We will be showing the documentary from 18:30, so please arrive from about 18:15 onwards so that you have time to get a drink etc.
After a quick break at around 19:15 we will move onto the talks and discussion, which will last about an hour. We have the function room until 21:00, but we can continue the discussion in the bar for those who would like to join us.
