Agenda:

👉 Evil Tech: How Devs Became Villains
Once upon a time, developers were the unsung heroes of our world. The stereotypical developer, with glasses perched on the nose and an innate talent for science, even inspired the alter egos of superheroes.
However, today, software engineers often find themselves under scrutiny for their roles in creating data-gathering apps, facial recognition software in CCTV systems, and the constant tracking of citizens through GPS, among other issues.
From being heroes to becoming modern-day Dr. Frankensteins, tech creators face an unenviable dilemma: to embrace malevolence or strive for heroism.
During this talk, we will delve deep into the complex relationship between technology and ethics, and explore how developers navigate the fine line between progress and principles.
This is our villain’s origin story, told with a touch of dark humor.

Containerization has taken the world of software development and application operation by storm in recent years. And the basics of "somehow" doing containerization are also easy and quick to learn and implement. But what are the pitfalls, how do you really get your own container images ready for production and can I actually develop directly in containers? This session answers all these questions using practical examples with a focus on C# / .NET

Azure Static Web Apps. An easy way to get a hobby site into the world for very little cost.
But that's not all they can do! With a few changes to the out of the box experience, and using the standard, paid, tier we can use these Azure Resources in our enterprise architecture!
We will touch upon infrastructure as code, to make reliable deployments to a known environment.
We'll look into how to change the default pipeline to allow unit tests etc for the code, and deploying the same build applications into multiple environments.
Finally, we'll take a look at Custom Authentication - using Auth0 to authenticate and a custom Azure Function to provide the roles for our users.

🛠️ Charles Boisvert - How Visual Functional #programming can make software dev more accessible to non-experts.
🧪 @glenathan - Glenn shows us what a recent migration to the @playwrightweb testing tool looks like.
After the continued success of the show-and-tell sessions we'll be meeting again for another in November.
So far we've had wonderful demonstrations of live coding systems for education, deterministic game character generation, realtime analysis techniques for modelling signals, projection-mapping, code hygiene analysis, an introduction to manipulating visuals with Tooll3, generating 3D terrain images of the UK from open data, convolution cellular automata, breathing life into an ancient plotter, an introduction to VJing with Touch Designer, AI generated music videos that worked with the beat, a web-based guitar tutor aid, raved to an amazing jungle live coded music performance, explored the mathematics of infectious diseases through the analogy of a card game, played colour games with AI, explored visual programming languages and more. It's been huge fun and there was lots to experience and learn. I'm expecting this month to be just as exciting.
This will take place upstairs in the Rutland Arms. Please ask at the bar for directions. We have the upstairs room exclusively booked out for us to use to share and talk about the projects we're planning or working on.
If you have something to show or share with us, please do bring it along. We have a projector and a speaker for you to use.
Also, if you're just curious and want to see what others are doing - there's absolutely no pressure to show anything - just come along.
The core idea is to draw inspiration from, encourage and ultimately learn from each other. No project is too basic or too sophisticated - we welcome it all.
There's no formal format for this event - it will very much be adhoc and unconferency. However, if you do have something you'd like to show and have any questions - feel free to reach out to me beforehand and Ill help you in any way I can.
Note that you'll be able to bring drinks from the bar upstairs as well as order food should you fancy that.
Really looking forward to seeing what you're all creatively coding!

Making music with synths and code - Pattern Club & Distribution of Power workshop
Description changed:
Come and make music using synthesisers and live coding in this workshop hosted by Pattern Club and Distribution of Power <3
Live coding is where people make music by executing code in real-time (we will be using Strudel.cc to do this). Synthesisers are electronic music instruments. Synths can also be controlled using live coding which is fun and cool !
In this workshop we'll be making music intuitively, trying things out and seeing how it sounds. It's 100% suitable for people who have never even looked at anything to do with synths or code. But it would also be fun if you do have a bit of experience or if you've been to one of our live coding workshops before :)
If you haven't done live coding you could take a look at this simple tutorial that runs in the web browser https://strudel.cc/workshop/getting-started/
Distribution of Power are bringing loads of synths for you to work with. Please bring your own headphones (wired not wireless) and laptop if you have one. Also if you do have any synths bring them along (absolutely no expectation of this!) and let us know what you’re bringing in the check out form: https://www.tickettailor.com/events/patternclub/1416934
The ‘Distribution of Power’ programme and this workshop is open to all but specifically aims to carve space and prioritise participants who identify as having visible and invisible disabilities, being neuro-divergent, female, LGBTQI+ identifying and carers.
Please let us know accessibility needs by emailing patternclub@mail.slab.org
*** Gut Level is a members space and you'll need membership to attend. Membership is open to all and starts from just £2 per year. More info at https://www.gutlevel.co.uk/membership. ***

Description changed:
SHU are hosting a workshop for employers to provide input into a new set of Higher Technical Qualifications they are looking to offer, inclluding four in digital subjects:
Digital Accessibility
Digital Community Management
Network Engineering
Software Development
The workshops will take place on Friday the 25th October at the Hallam i-Lab, Aspect Court, Pond Street, and will run from 10am followed by a lunch at 1pm.
Higher Technical Qualifications are classroom-based, student-funded courses delivered in FE Colleges at levels 4 and 5, They are designed to offer a route into high-quality technical careers, without the need for students to study for a full undergraduate degree at level 6. Employer engagement at the curriculum design stage and ongoing is required to ensure the courses are and remain useful to employers as the sector develops.
