PyData Edinburgh: Education, Education, Education

It's our birthday! Following on from an amazing first year for PyData Edinburgh, we welcome you to our next great installment!

We're also at a new venue, courtesy of our new sponsor, Lloyds Banking Group. We're really pleased that to be able to bring some speakers from further afield, The DataLab has also supported us for this event.

We'll have our regular update on the PyData community, lightning talks and we're delighted to have Nicholas Tollervey to give our main talk.

We look forward to seeing you there - doors open at 1815, make sure you've clicked attend to reserve your place!

TALK DETAILS
=============

Education, Education, Education
---------------------------------------------

Presenter: Nicholas Tollervey

Nicholas is a classically trained musician, philosophy graduate, teacher, writer and software developer. A Python Software Foundation (PSF) Fellow and serial PyCon Keynote Speaker, with a wealth of consulting and contracting experience, he currently focuses on education-related projects around Python.

Description:

This talk will discuss why a focus on education is important for the wider Python community. It will do this by describing and showing past, present and future projects in this area:

* (past) micro:bit. Over the past couple of years, a million British schoolchildren were given simple micro:bit computers, running Micropython (ported by the Nicholas).

* (present) Mu. Mu is an open-source, class-room-, student- and teacher- friendly Python editor (written in Python). It has direct support for "flashing" code to the micro:bit and is widely used in classrooms in the UK and around the world. Nicholas leads this open-source project.

* (future) CodeGrades: CodeGrades aim to be to (Python) development, what the ASRM music grades (1-8) are to musical instrument playing. As a former professional musician and music teacher, Nicholas is trying to bring tried and tested pedagogical techniques from music to coding, with 8 levels of free-to-study, pay-a-modest-fee-to-be-examined Code Grades.

The talk will include audience participation and include live demonstrations (along with an unerring sense of optimism in the demo-gods).
