Internet Privacy, Surveillance and Human Rights - from Edward Snowden to Cambridge Analytica
Internet privacy matters more than most people realise - it isn’t just about ‘individual privacy’ but it underpins many of our human rights, from freedom of speech and access to information to freedom of assembly and association to protection from discrimination. Social media, big data analysis and profiling and ‘tailoring’ services can let powerful groups - whether governmental or corporate - manipulate and influence people without their even knowing it. This talk by Dr Paul Bernal will discuss some of the ways this works, what power it has - and whether we can do anything about it.
Dr Paul Bernal is a Senior Lecturer at the UEA Law School, specialising in privacy, human rights and the internet. His research covers both governmental and corporate invasions of privacy, from surveillance to social media. His new book, The Internet, Warts and All, will be published by Cambridge University Press this summer.
After the talk there will be an opportunity to ask questions and discuss the issues raised, followed by refreshments. Next, from 9-10pm, the Cambridge City group will hold its monthly campaigns meeting. Newcomers are very welcome, especially if you would like to find out more about getting involved.
