Edinburgh Linux Users Group: Edinburgh Linux User Group Talk : WebSockets

The Edinburgh Linux User Group is a social gathering of users of the LInux operating system. EdLUG meetups are a chance to wind down, talk about technology, fix someone's computer... or talk about anything at all really!

This month we will be hosting guest speaker Kenny Coyle from ScotLUG who will talk about Web Sockets, their client and server implementations, with JavaScript and NodeJS, and how this relates to... football!

"Web-sockets, how I finally understood football.

"Support for Web-sockets and similar technologies is being bundled into the web browsers that we see every day. Chrome, Firefox, Safari and even Internet Explorer all have native implementations. To this end it is becoming much easier to build rich, useful web applications and dynamic features using the technology.

"I'll be talking about implementation of both Web Socket clients and Servers using Javascript, NodeJS and Socket.io with some examples. I'll also be talking about how it helped to make the recent World Cup coverage real time making it much more interesting."

Talk starts at 7:30pm at the back of the Southsider, West Richmond Street, Edinburgh and will last until 9pm at the latest, after which we will be all free to mix and socialize. Please arrive before start of talk to minimize disturbance :-)
