Brighton Pavilion 'Civil Liberties' Hustings - Quiz Your Future MP!
Description changed:
You are invited to join us for General Election Hustings on 'Civil Liberties'.
We've had confirmation from Caroline Lucas MP (Green Party and Howard Pilott (The Socialist Party of Great Britain), Nick Yeomans (Independent).
We expect to hear back from the other candidates: Purna Sen (Labour), Clarence Mitchell (Conservative), Chris Bowers (Lib Dem), Nigel Carter (UKIP), Howard Pilott (The Socialist Party of Great Britain) and Charlotte Rose (Independent)
At Open Rights Group, we spend a lot of our time trying to get politicians to listen to what we have to say but the one time that we know that they are likely to listen to us is during the run up to a General Election when candidates want to know which issues voters care about.
We want to know what candidates think about human rights in general. Is current legislation adequate? Should it be reformed? Do they believe we must enact judgments make by European human rights courts?
Other areas of concern are:
Privacy - mass surveillance by the security services, data retention by ISPs, RIPA requests for information by the police, councils and other organisations, CCTV, ID cardsFree speech - prosecutions for online speech, media freedom, the use of Stop and search to disrupt protests, police handling of protests.Legal rights - the right to Legal Aid, detention without trial, prison reform, secret courts, the use of civil ordersForeign policy - drone strikes, the arms trade, tackling radicalisation
This event is free and open to the public. Please arrive at the Friends Meeting House from 7pm for a 7.30pm start.
