Scotland Data Science & Technology MeetUp: Digital Catapult & Zero to Data Science at a Start Up...

Presentation 1 - Peter Bloomfield - www.linkedin.com

Peter Bloomfield will be talking about the Machine Intelligence Garage programme, run by the Digital Catapult. The MI Garage programme provides AI and machine learning startups with access to computational resources to help them scale faster. Peter will introduce the ecosystem research that lead to the setting up of the programme, the resources available and the ways startups can interact with MI Garage. Attendees will have an opportunity to see some examples of companies that have joined the programme
and and the sorts of outcomes we are looking to achieve.

Peter Bloomfield is the AI/Machine learning policy & engagement manager at the Digital Catapult in London. Through the Machine Intelligence Garage, he works with startups to provide them with facilities and support to remove computing constraints from their product development.
He is also working on AI public policy, government strategy and mapping the UK's evolving AI ecosystem.
Before working at the Digital Catapult, Peter was an Neuroscientist working on problems including how different cell populations change when learning new skills, brain changes associated with schizophrenia and new ways to treat multiple sclerosis.
He has also worked as a scientific consultant on projects developing human-computer interfaces for immersive environments."

Presentation 2 - Mark Shilton - www.linkedin.com

Mark will present: "Going from zero to data science at a start up"

Mark is a Principal Data Scientist at TravelNest, an Edinburgh based start up focused on making it easier for holiday rental owners to market their properties. He has been on a long journey to data science that started many years ago in transport planning consultancy, writing government and local authority policy documents. He quickly realised it was much more interesting to get into the numbers behind the policy and moved to building huge spreadsheet models for forecasting rail franchise revenues. He managed to mostly ditch the spreadsheets 7 year ago when he joined Skyscanner and actually learned to code and use genuinely large datasets. He joined TravelNest 4 months ago as their first data scientist and Mark will talk about the challenges and opportunities of being a data scientist in a start up with not much data but the remit to build a data science platform, team and data driven products that will contribute to TravelNest's success.
