PyData Edinburgh - Search and Recommendation Engines

Welcome to the third meetup for the PyData Edinburgh group!

We look forward to welcoming you all to a new venue - Wood Mackenzie, who have kindly invited us to use their great facilities.

We'll have our regular update on the PyData community, lightning talks and we're delighted to have Joan Figuerola join us from SpecifiedBy to give our main talk - sharing some insights into search and recommendation engines.

We look forward to seeing you there - doors open at 1815, make sure you've clicked attend to reserve your place!

TALK DETAILS

Introduction to Search and Recommendation Engines
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Presenter: Joan Figuerola

Joan Figuerola Hurtado is the Co-founder and Chief Technology Officer at SpecifiedBy - a small start-up that connects architects with building product manufacturers. His work ranges from front-end Javascript development to building complex data processing pipelines. He's always on the lookout for technical solutions that create great user experiences accomodated for resource constrained companies.

Description:

The talk will cover the basic building blocks for building search and recommendation engines. We will share our one person journey building SpecifiedBy’s information retrieval systems.
The talk will cover the following topics:
- Crawling, structuring and storing data.
- Search engines: architectures, resources and evaluation.
- Recommendation engines: architectures, resources and evaluation.
- QA
Each section will cover introductory content and also present a few issues that we faced as we improved our information retrieval systems. Hopefully you will take away relevant insights.

LIGHTNING TALKS
==================
Share your stories! Share your successes & failures! Share your hints & tips! Whether you are a beginner or an expert, we want to hear from you.
Lightning talks have been really popular at other PyData meetups, so let's get the ideas flowing in Edinburgh!

No need for slides (bring them on a memory stick if you do have some though) and no need to be an expert speaker!

Just sign up on the evening: anything goes (within reason!) and no more than 5 minutes long — we'll be bringing the alarm clock!

LOGISTICS
===========
We've kindly been invited to use the great facilities at Wood Mackenzie— please note all attendees MUST sign up to the Meetup to be admitted.

Doors open at 1815 with refreshments.
Talks kick off with an update on news relating to the PyData community at 1845.
And we'll end the evening with pizza and more refreshments, wrapping up by 2100.
