Lean Agile Glasgow

WORKSHOP:
Valerie McLean - Where shall we all go for dinner tonight?

Deciding where to go for dinner as a group is hard, but the struggle of making decisions is not just for eating out, good decisions need to be made every day in the workplace. We'll explore why we find it so hard to make decisions, what happens when we don't make decisions at all and how we can facilitate better and more effective decision making, without the headaches!

LIGHTNING TALK:
Gary Fleming - Kicking Away The Crutches of Agile

“Someone sold them the training wheels, but they don’t have the bike yet” - Kyle Bremner.

Frameworks. Methodologies. Ceremonies. Manifestos. Some would say they represent the collective wisdom of our community. Others would say we often buy things wholesale to avoid having to engage our brains. The truth is messier.

From the idea of cadence to the ceremonies of Scrum, let's examine the value of the scaffolding of Agile and try to think more clearly about what we need. What we really need. We'll find alternatives to the common solutions we see, and figure out how to look for our own contextual answers, rather than just copying what Spotify did again.

We'll separate the Why from the What, the Wheat from the Chaff, the Agile from the marketing.

TALK:
Chris McDermott - Maturity Mapping : Focus your improvement energy on what matters

When we look to improve our teams or our organisations we often reach for a maturity model. We’ll start with an assessment that grades us and then offers a recipe to follow to greatness. It might tell us we don’t visualise well enough or our stories aren’t perfectly formed and what we should do to get better but does that really help us? Does it promote continuous learning and does it help us solve the real problems we are facing.

One of the issues with the maturity models we often use is they are context free. They don’t understand the environment, the challenges and the specific needs we have in our context.

In this session Chris will explore an alternative, Maturity Mapping, using Wardley Maps and Cynefin, that allows you to develop situational awareness and build a shared understanding of the unique challenges you face and where you should focus you’re improvement efforts.
