  • Open Source Summit Europe (OSSEU) is the leading conference for developers, architects and other technologists – as well as open source community and industry leaders – to collaborate, share information, learn about the latest technologies and gain a competitive advantage by using innovative open solutions. Over 2,000 will gather for OSSEU in 2018.

  • The Docker Edinburgh meetup takes place at Codebase, in their Event Space, which is accessible from the entrance on 38 Castle Terrace. The Meetup will run from around 17h30 to 20h00 (note early start for this one!), with further discussion afterwards in the pub! Cloudsoft will be sponsoring the meetup, and pizza and beer will be provided.

This meetup coincides with the Open Source Summit in Edinburgh, so we're in the process of poaching some top quality speakers. I'll update with more details later in the week.

Please note that I've moved the date and time of this meetup in an attempt to fit in with the OSS schedule.

"Since Docker came on the scene in 2013, for many it was the first they'd heard of containers. They existed before, but have exploded since then. Today if you intend on running containers in production, you will be primarily concerned with the Kubernetes level, but what is happening below? What do...

developers and practice our craft in a friendly and informal

This dojo is an opportunity to learn from (or help) your peers
and to work with technologies that maybe you don't encounter in your
    everyday role.

We loosely follow the format of the London Python Dojos.

    ## Stage 1: Gather

We all get together at an agreed place and time. We chat until we
    think that everyone is here.

    ## Stage 2: Pick a Project

Everyone gets around the whiteboard and throws around ideas for
something we could attempt to achieve in a couple of hours. We put
together a list and then everyone votes on their favourite idea. The
ideal idea should be fun, challenging but not impossible in the time.

    ## Stage 3: Pick Teams

Teams are chosen organically based on general experience and more
specific experience with the kind of chosen project. The teams should...

  • Let’s explore how to harness the power of on-demand Azure platform services, while retaining all the advantages of continuous integration and deployment. Here’s just a few of the technologies we’re going to investigate:

    > Azure DB

    > Azure websites

    > Functions

    > Containers

    > Bots

    > Machine Learning

Our ‘end of the day’ goal? To demo a reliable and repeatable test and deployment pipeline for one of the above.

    What is Software Craftsmanship?

Less frantic than a hackathon, this will be a day spent experimenting with other like-minded .NET developers to collaborate and learn together in real-life scenarios…without the pressure to get ‘something’ delivered.

  • This is our monthly informal gathering - just turn up, grab a drink, sit down and start talking UX! If you haven't been before you'll find us on the right as you come in, opposite the bar.

Check out our new discussions board! Feel free to post anything here that you think will be of interest to the group e.g. thoughts/questions related to UX, details of relevant events, local job postings etc.

  • Our goal is to enable underrepresented people to learn programming in a safe and collaborative environment and expand their career opportunities. To achieve this we run free regular workshops, regular one-off events and try to create opportunities for our students making technology and coding more accessible.
Access our workshop by visiting us at codebar.io and sign up as a student or coach.

  • Welcome to Part 2 of our DevOps Playground with Zalenium!

As this is a hands-on session, please remember to bring a laptop with you to the Meetup.

If you missed Part 1, then please see our ReadMe and PowerPoint slides: github.com
This will provide you with an overview of Zalenium.

    =====

In this Playground we will expand on what we explored during our first hands-on experience with Zalenium and demonstrate how Zalenium can fit into your Continuous Testing process.

Our practical activity will involve creating a Jenkins pipeline to:

    - Set up dependencies.
    - Start Zalenium.
    - Run our test suite in Zalenium.
    - Generate reports based on test results.

This will provide us with a true end to end Continuous Testing process.

    =====

A few things to keep in mind:

    * Although no prior knowledge is required, it would be useful to view our previous Zalenium session slides to gain an understanding of what Zalenium is an...

  • Mob Programming: All the brilliant people working on the same thing, at the same time, in the same place, and on the same computer.

Mob Programming is a cost-effective, collaborative and fun way to get work done together. It's a whole-team approach to development, where coding, designing, testing, and working with the "customer" (partner, Product Owner, User, etc.) is all done as a team.

In the morning, participants will learn all about Mob Programming. We cover the mechanics of how to work together as a Mob as well as the techniques that make this form of development so effective. We’ll learn how a Mob performs sample project work, including user stories, prioritization, test-driven development, refactoring, and retrospectives. And there’ll be a practical demonstration of Mob Programming at work.

In the afternoon, participants will work in small groups, practicing Mob Programming for real (please bring a laptop if you have one). Designed and facilitated by Mob Programming pio...

  • Five people at one computer?! How can that possibly be productive?

While this seems like a reasonable question, it's not easily answered - until we begin to understand the power of flow.

Mob Programming grew from the quest of one team to learn how to work well together. Once we started We almost immediately noticed that working this way provided better results in a variety of ways:
    - We were getting more, and more important things done
    - The quality of our work was increasing dramatically
    - Our knowledge, skills, and capabilities were improving rapidly
    - And all while we were having a lot of fun!

While we noticed these benefits and more, and it was clear this was in a large part due to working well together throughout the day - we didn't have an understanding of why this was working so wonderfully for us.

A hint came early on when we recognized we were achieving a one-piece flow - but we didn't realize the importance of this until we started exploring the meaning and po...

We meet monthly and as outlined, it’s a completely informal meet up so the discussions are entirely open. We have no speakers as this is all about you and giving you a chance to meet and talk to everyone in the community.

The meetup is free to attend, so invite your product friends. Come along for the beer, stay for the great product discussions!

    Best,
    From all the organizers.

  • We'll be meeting at Milnes bar on Hanover St at about 6:30pm. There *should* be Python logo printouts on the table if you need to find us.

There's *no minimum skill level* for coming along! If you like talking about Python or related technologies, and you're interested in meeting like-minded people and finding out what they're up to, just turn up! If you'd like to be introduced to some people, ask for me - Mark Smith - and I'll be happy to introduce you to some people with similar interests.

  • Join us at C++ Edinburgh for some great talks and to hang out with local C++ developers over some pizza and drinks. More details coming soon.

  • Welcoming anyone involved or working in technology.

TechMeetup is a monthly excuse for developers and the tech community around Scotland to meet up and learn new stuff from each other. No name badges, no sales pitches, just informative presentations from your peers and a chance to meet some of the tech community around you.

We're not centred around specific languages, technologies or disciplines; we believe there's stuff to learn from mixing everyone together. There's no cost to attend, and food and drink are provided.

  • To be decided but will normally be one or more of:

    • Short/Lightning Talks

    • Agile Game/Workshop

    • Lean Coffee - a structured but agenda-less meeting, the participants decide what to discuss using leancoffee.org (leancoffee.org) format.
