Always on, mostly connected, always integrated in the API economy

For most businesses, technology is becoming a major factor in them remaining competitive and being disruptive in the future. To stay ahead, businesses are looking to bring new applications/features to market much quicker and at a lower cost than they have done in the past. Many are looking to SaaS applications, Mobile applications, IOT applications, hybrid cloud applications, and exposing their business services as API’s for both internal and external consumption.

All of these initiatives require integration!

Remaining competitive needs a modern application development and deployment platform. Many businesses are turning to a microservice based architecture to increase their agility and to a container based platform to increase their deployment automat...

  • MOT Edinburgh Members we have a great opportunity for you here!

The creator of TestSphere is passing though Edinburgh on his European cycling tour to Test Bash Brighton (I did tell him there are other modes of transport available).

Beren has offered to run a free interactive workshop to demo the Risk Storming technique you can use with TestSphere during his short time in Edinburgh.

Due to the interactive nature of the demo this is limited to 25 attendees.

    What is a Risk Storming?

The RiskStorming game is a visual, collaborative method to map your Testing on threats to the quality aspects that matter.

The game consists of three phases:

    1. Select a subset of important quality aspect.

    2. Come up with risks to the selected quality aspects.

    3. Use the rest of TestSphere to create a strategy in function of those risks.

Linked is a blog that explains this in more depth from a workshop at the Agile & Automation days in Krakau.

It is explained much more in depth...

  • And we're back! Our speakers and audience made for a fabulous first event so we can hope you can join us for the second.

We'll have our regular update on the PyData community, lightning talks and the main talk - this time we are welcoming Ewan Nicolson, Principal Data Scientist at Skyscanner here in Edinburgh.

This time we're being hosted by the IoT Initiative at Argyle House, Lady Lawson Street.

    TALK DETAILS
    =============

Great techniques I’m stealing from software engineers
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Presenter: Ewan Nicolson

Ewan has been working professionally with numbers and computers for the past 12 years. During the past 5 years at Skyscanner he’s seen the data team grow from 2 analysts based in Edinburgh, to a global team of 25+ data scientists making global impact.

    Description:

Data science is a young field, and we can learn lots from people who have gone before us. My colleagues in software development have taught me lo...

  • Tonight's talk will be given by Tai Kedzierski, covering bash scripting and how to write clean scripts.

Writing shell scripts is a common system administrator task, and whilst a programming practice, generally does not follow the same rigours of software development process - as a result, bash scripts are often regarded merely as ugly, unmaintainable shims.

Tai will give some examples of some of his bash scripts from years ago, compared to their cleaner counterparts today, and how he has tried to treat bash as a "real" programming language using shellcheck, git version control, and bash-builder.

    Shellcheck: shellcheck.net

  • Our March meetup's talk will be confirmed soon. It will last from 6 pm to 7 pm and afterward, we will adjourn to a pub for further discussion and chat.

    # Paving The Way To Orchestration - Pete Wilcock

With containers having firmly established themselves as the mode de jour for deploying microservices, the next step is the magical orchestration using Kubernetes/Mesos/Swarm et al. But let's back up a bit and discuss how you start to go from your traditional host-based configuration management deployment solution and package it up into containers to start with. Pete will talk about some of the things you need to consider as you move towards that ultimate goal - or do you even need to?

Pete is the DevOps Lead at Sumdog, a game-based learning platform designed to motivate children to work on maths, reading and writing and help close the attainment gap in primary and secondary education worldwide.

  • Come enjoy food, drink, and chat in a casual friendly environment with other developers using Mac and iOS. Anyone is welcome!

  • One of our regular drop in open nights, no need to call ahead, just turn up! We'll be tinkering with hardware, hacking some code and probably eating. Feel free to come along with a project or idea for some help, use some tools, or just hang out.

  • Join us for CodeBase Unfiltered, our caffeine(or decaf) fuelled regular meeting of the minds, for techies & non-techies alike.

Mudano is developing the autonomous project. We are using AI technology to build a project management platform that will predict project risks and suggest the most efficient route to ensure on-time and on-cost project delivery. We look forward to seeing you there!

    Best,
    From all the organizers.

  • • What we'll do

Product Up is a new informal pub meetup in Edinburgh dedicated to product managers and people who are passionate about building quality products. Following the success of the first meetup, we are making it a regular thing!

Come along, meet other product people and chat over a drink. Grab your free ticket now and don't forget to invite your product buddies. We look forward to seeing you!

    • Important to know

We want to create a comfortable and relaxed environment for our attendees so we would appreciate it if you could refrain from directly selling products/services or do recruitment at our events. It's fine if deals/transactions come out naturally from conversations.

  • To be decided but will normally be one or more of:

    • Short/Lightning Talks

    • Agile Game/Workshop

    • Lean Coffee - a structured but agenda-less meeting, the participants decide what to discuss using leancoffee.org (leancoffee.org) format.

  • This is our monthly informal gathering - just turn up, grab a drink, sit down and start talking UX! If you haven't been before you'll find us on the right as you come in, opposite the bar.

Check out our new discussions board! Feel free to post anything here that you think will be of interest to the group e.g. thoughts/questions related to UX, details of relevant events, local job postings etc.

  • We'll be meeting at Milnes bar on Hanover St at about 6:30pm. There *should* be Python logo printouts on the table if you need to find us.

There's *no minimum skill level* for coming along! If you like talking about Python or related technologies, and you're interested in meeting like-minded people and finding out what they're up to, just turn up! If you'd like to be introduced to some people, ask for me - Mark Smith - and I'll be happy to introduce you to some people with similar interests.
