Open Rights Group London: Expanding Blocked.org.uk: Challenging Censorship Internationally

We are pleased to announce that ORG London's August talk will be an introduction to fighting back against censorship in Tunisia, Kenya and Bangladesh from Article 19's Head of Digital Niels ten Oever.

Our Speaker

Niels has designed and implemented freedom of expression projects in the Horn of Africa, the Middle East and Northern Africa, Brazil and Afghanistan.

Niels is a free and open source software enthusiast who has trained journalists, activists and human rights defenders in reporting, digital security, and media production. He holds a cum laude research MA in philosophy from the University of Amsterdam.

Our Talk

Most people will no doubt be aware of Open Rights Group's Blocked project, a website to find out which harmless websites are being blocked by inefficient web filters. It highlighted over blocking and censorship in the UK.

Article 19 and Open Rights Group have teamed up to measure and monitor censorship in Tunisia, Kenya and Bangladesh. This talk will take you through the technology, the obstacles, and the different approaches we developed for the campaigns in each country.

Look at Blocked.org.uk here:

We'll hear the talk from 7.30 till 8.15pm and have a Q&A from 8.15 to 9.00pm. We will head to a nearby pub afterwards from 9.00pm onwards.

Please follow the signs to the Nomad Studio on the third floor - arrive from 7.15pm for light refreshments and a 7.30pm start.

N.B. Entrance is free and open to members of the public but please RSVP in advance so we have an idea of numbers.

See you there,
